  • Joshua Iginla stated that Peter Obi was the only candidate capable of challenging Bola Tinubu in 2027
  • He urged Obi to run as president with a northern running mate rather than accept a vice-presidential role
  • Reports indicated that Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso had entered talks over a possible political alliance

The founder of Champion Royal Assembly, Joshua Iginla, has stated that only Peter Obi possesses the political strength to mount a serious challenge against President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during a live Sunday service, the cleric shared his views on Nigeria’s evolving political landscape, stressing that Obi must emerge as the presidential candidate of any strong opposition coalition. He suggested that pairing the former Anambra State governor with a credible northern running mate would significantly enhance the opposition’s chances at the polls.

According to Iginla, Obi’s political relevance and appeal across southern Nigeria make him a natural choice to lead the opposition ticket. However, he cautioned the former governor against accepting a vice-presidential role under any arrangement, warning that such a move could undermine his political standing.

“This is my political opinion. If we truly want to give the ruling party a strong fight, put Peter Obi there and let him be deputised by any Northerner,” he said.

He added: “Peter Obi, don’t — if you deputise anybody, you have lost your political relevance. It is better you step aside completely than play second fiddle.”

The cleric further emphasised the importance of patience and strategic positioning in the build-up to the 2027 elections, noting that political timing would be crucial for success.

His remarks come amid ongoing discussions within opposition circles regarding possible alliances ahead of the next general election. In particular, there have been reports of talks involving Obi and former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, with supporters speculating about a potential joint ticket.

While no formal agreement has been announced, such discussions highlight growing efforts among opposition figures to consolidate support and present a united front capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Iginla’s intervention adds a religious and public voice to the broader political debate, reflecting increasing interest from various sectors in shaping the direction of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential race.
