Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has extended his heartfelt congratulations to Donald Trump following his declared victory in the 2024 U.S. presidential election.
In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga on X (formerly Twitter), Tinubu's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, the Nigerian leader expressed optimism about the future of US-Nigeria relations under Trump’s leadership, emphasising economic cooperation, peace, and global partnership.
Tinubu’s congratulatory message highlighted the longstanding ties between Nigeria and the United States, signalling a desire to strengthen those bonds amid the evolving challenges of the contemporary world.
The statement read in part:
"President Tinubu looks forward to strengthening the ties between Nigeria and the United States amid the complex challenges and opportunities of the contemporary world. Together, we can foster economic cooperation, promote peace, and address global challenges that affect our citizens."
Tinubu also expressed his admiration for the trust and confidence the American people have placed in Trump’s leadership, acknowledging that the former president's re-election reflects the will of the American electorate.
"President Tinubu congratulates the American people on their commitment to democracy," the statement continued.
"He believes that President Trump's victory will usher in an era of earnest, beneficial, and reciprocal economic and development partnerships between Africa and the United States."
Tinubu’s message emphasised his belief that Trump’s return to the White House would foster stronger partnerships between the U.S. and Africa, particularly in terms of trade, development, and mutual cooperation.
Tinubu, who has placed a high priority on advancing Nigeria’s economic growth, expressed confidence that the relationship between the two countries would evolve to benefit both nations.
"Given President Trump’s experience as the 45th president of the United States from 2017 to 2021, his return to the White House as the 47th president will usher in a new era for Africa and the United States, one characterised by deepened economic ties and a shared commitment to resolving global challenges," Tinubu stated.
The Nigerian president also underscored the global influence of the United States, particularly in shaping the course of international events. He expressed hope that under Trump's leadership, the world would see progress toward greater peace and prosperity, particularly in areas where African nations face challenges.
