5 issues in the news that should matter to you today

1. JAMB releases 2025 mock UTME results: The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has officially released the results of the 2025 Mock Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, held on Thursday, April 10.

In a statement issued on Sunday, April 13, by its spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, the board advised candidates to check their results by texting “MOCKRESULT” to either 55019 or 66019 using the phone number they registered with.

2. Lagos intensifies clampdown on rickety vehicles, vows continued enforcement: The Lagos State Government has stepped up its efforts to rid the roads of unfit and poorly maintained vehicles, with the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) impounding several rickety vehicles across the city.

Over the weekend, VIS Director Engr. Akin-George Fashola confirmed the development, urging commuters to avoid boarding dilapidated vehicles, which he described as major safety hazards.

Although the number of seized vehicles wasn't specified, he noted that most were in deplorable conditions, featuring outdated components and inadequate safety measures.

3. Presidency denounces 2027 campaign billboards for Tinubu: The Presidency has distanced itself from billboards and campaign materials promoting the 2027 presidential bid of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima.

In a statement on Sunday, April 13,  signed by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency called for an immediate halt to the unauthorised political promotions.

4. SERAP rejects blogger regulation bill, urges withdrawal: The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker Abbas Tajudeen to drop a controversial bill seeking to amend the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, which aims to regulate bloggers.

SERAP emphasised the importance of safeguarding press freedom and human rights, urging lawmakers to ensure any legislative amendment promotes rather than restricts the rights of bloggers and journalists in Nigeria.

5. US scales back tariffs on tech imports: In a move to reduce tensions in the ongoing trade war with China, the Trump administration has announced exemptions for a range of consumer electronics from its global import tariffs.

A notice released on Friday, April 11, by the US Customs and Border Protection revealed that products such as smartphones, laptops, and memory chips will be excluded from the recent levies.
