As part of our ongoing ‘Know Your Lawmakers’ series, we spotlight the senators representing Katsina State in the National Assembly for the period between 2023 and 2027.
Katsina's senators hold important responsibilities in the National Assembly. These include lawmaking, impeachment of high-ranking officials, and confirming presidential nominations.
Beyond these constitutional duties, they are instrumental in advocating for the interests and welfare of their constituents, ensuring that the needs of Katsina’s diverse population are effectively represented at the national level.
Below are the senators representing Katsina State in the 10th National Assembly:
1. Nasiru Sani Zangon Daura (Katsina North)
Nasiru Sani Zangon-Daura, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), represented Katsina North Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate. His political career began in 2011 when he was elected to the 7th National Assembly.
Zangon-Daura was reelected to both the 8th and 9th Assemblies and served as the Chairman of the House Committee on Interior during his tenure in the House of Representatives.
In the February 25, 2023, Senate election, Zangon-Daura secured a victory with 174,062 votes, defeating the incumbent Senator Ahmed Baba Kaita of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 163,586 votes.
Zangon-Daura played an active role in legislative affairs, sponsoring a motion titled “Urgent Need to Review Security Approach in Addressing Banditry Attacks in Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, Kaduna, and Kebbi States in the Northwest of Nigeria.”
The Senate acknowledged the connection between insecurity and food shortages and called on the military and security agencies to take further action to address the crisis.
2. Musa Abdulaziz Yar’adua (Katsina Central)
Abdulaziz Musa Yar'Adua, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), assumed office as the senator for Katsina Central on June 13, 2023.
Yar’Adua hails from a prominent family, with notable relatives including former Nigerian President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and former de facto Vice President General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua.
Before entering politics, Yar’Adua had a distinguished career in the Nigerian Army, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2010 after 29 years of service.
Yar'Adua secured the senatorial seat with 153,512 votes in the 2023 Nigerian Senate elections.
As part of his legislative move, Yar'Adua sponsored a motion aimed at raising awareness and improving kidney treatment facilities across Nigeria.
The Senate subsequently adopted the motion, calling for the provision of comprehensive health insurance packages for patients suffering from chronic kidney disease.
“Recent statistics from the Nigerian Association of Nephrology, NAN, reveal that an alarming 25 million Nigerians are living with kidney disease.
“This calls for urgent attention to address the prevalence of this life-threatening condition and improve kidney treatment facilities in our country,” Yar’Adua stated.
3. Dandutse Mohammed Muntari (Katsina South)
Dandutse Mohammed Muntari is the current Senator representing Katsina South Senatorial District in the 10th Senate, serving his first term under the All Progressives Congress (APC) party.
Muntari was appointed Chairman of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND). In the 2023 elections, he won with 203,245 votes, defeating Shehu Garba Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), who received 151,519 votes.
During his time in the Senate, Muntari joined efforts to address the worsening insecurity in the North-West, which had led to widespread deaths and kidnappings.
This followed a motion co-sponsored by Senator Nasiru Zangon-Daura (APC, Katsina North) along with 10 other lawmakers from the North-West region.
He said, “The incessant banditry attacks in the North-West region will significantly impact food production and agricultural activities, thus jeopardising food security and livelihood of the people in the affected states of the region, especially in the present rainy season.”
