As part of our ongoing ‘Know Your Lawmakers’ series, we spotlight the senators representing Bauchi State in the National Assembly for the period between 2023 and 2027.
Bauchi State, nicknamed the "Pearl of Tourism," is located in the North Eastern part of Nigeria and is represented in the Senate by three distinguished senators, each serving one of the state's senatorial districts.
Created in 1976, Bauchi senators hold significant responsibilities, including lawmaking, the impeachment of high-ranking officials, and the confirmation of presidential nominations.
Additionally, they play a crucial role in advocating for the interests of their constituents, ensuring their needs are heard at the national level.
TheRadar compiled the Senators, representing the people of Bauchi State in the 10th National Assembly below:
1. Abdul Ahmed Ningi (Bauchi Central)
Abdul Ahmed Ningi, a prominent member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), currently represents the Bauchi Central Senatorial District in Nigeria’s Senate.
Born on April 20, 1960, in Ningi, Bauchi State, Ningi has had a long-standing career in Nigerian politics. His journey began in 1999 when he was elected to the House of Representatives, a position he held for three consecutive terms.
Before transitioning to the Senate, Ningi served as the House Majority Leader from 2003 to 2007, shaping legislative proceedings during his tenure. In 2011, he moved to the Senate, defeating the incumbent senator and subsequently assuming the role of Deputy Majority Leader.
However, Ningi’s time in the Senate has been marked by controversy. In March 2024, he was suspended for three months after accusing the National Assembly of inflating the country’s 2024 budget by N3 trillion. The suspension was cut short when the Senate recalled him.
2. Dahuwa Samaila Kaila (Bauchi North)
Dahuwa Samaila Kaila, currently representing Bauchi North in the 10th National Assembly, is facing growing discontent from his constituents regarding his representation.
Kaila, who previously served as Bauchi State's Commissioner for Health, is being criticised for the state of healthcare in his senatorial district, particularly at Primary Health Care (PHC) centres.
In a letter addressed to Senator Kaila, Mustapha Baba Azare, a concerned constituent, highlighted severe shortcomings in healthcare facilities within the district.
Azare noted that many PHC centres are struggling with inadequate medical equipment and insufficient staff, leading to preventable maternal and child deaths, as well as the deaths of patients in emergency wards.
The letter also expressed frustration from Kaila's constituents, who had high expectations for his leadership. They hoped he would leave behind a legacy of job creation and significant capital projects, but there is growing concern that these expectations remain unmet.
The letter called on Kaila to address these issues and fulfil the promises made during his election campaign.
3. Shehu Buba Umar (Bauchi South)
Shehu Buba Umar, a Nigerian politician born on October 2, 1976, and currently serving as a senator for Bauchi South under the All Progressives Congress (APC), is facing intense scrutiny after being implicated in alleged connections to terror suspects in Northern Nigeria.
The Department of State Services (DSS) is investigating these links, prompting concerns among his constituents, who are now pushing for a recall movement.
In addition to the terror allegations, Senator Buba has recently made headlines for his remarks on the federal government’s palliative distribution in Bauchi State.
He called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure that any federal palliative intended for the state be funnelled through the two ministerial representatives from Bauchi.
Buba accused the state governor of diverting some of the relief supplies for personal gain, further fueling public discontent with his leadership.
“Some of the palliatives the federal government sent to Bauchi state following the hardships being encountered by the people are being diverted by the state governor for self-aggrandisement, who takes such commodities to the markets and personally pocket the proceeds,” Senator Shehu Buba Umar stated.
