In Nigeria's legislative framework, the Senate, also known as the Red Chamber—holds the highest legislative authority. It is responsible for enacting laws that foster peace, order, and good governance across the nation.
Additionally, the Senate plays a crucial role in impeaching major officials, including the President, Vice President, Federal Judges, and other high-ranking officials. It also confirms presidential nominations for key positions, such as senior diplomats, federal cabinet members, and various commission members.
Established on August 27, 1991, during General Ibrahim Babangida's administration, Abia State is divided into three senatorial districts, each represented by a senator in the National Assembly.
The State emerged from Imo State in southeastern Nigeria. The name "Abia" reflects the state's major areas which are Aba, Bende, Isuikwuato, and Afikpo.
With its administrative capital in Umuahia and its commercial hub in Aba, the state is affectionately known as God's Own State.
