The Big Brother Naija reality TV show has always been a hotbed of drama, suspense and unexpected twists and this year’s edition is no exception. This year’s theme “No Loose Guard” already promises surprises and a test of housemates’ resilience. The show, which started on Sunday July 28, saw 14 pairs enter the Big Brother house and it has been drama and fun since then. There have been some unpredictable twists since the show started, from the unexpected eviction to the introduction of more challenges.
6 major twists of BBNaija season 9
Here are some of the major twists introduced in this season:
- Dynamic duos
This year, Big Brother came up with an interesting twist. Housemates auditioned in pairs and entered the house as pairs. According to the show’s host, whatever happens to one housemate in a pair, happens to his or her partner. This means the housemates will get evicted as a pair, get strikes as a pair, rewards and even punishments. This is one of the major twists this season because it affects the dynamics of the game that viewers are used to.
- Head of House
In previous seasons, the Head of House title was not easy to get as housemates had to go through rigorous and highly competitive challenges to be worthy of the title. The Head of House title also came with immunity and the power to save and replace during eviction or nominations.
However, this year, housemates get to vote for the pair they want as their Heads of House. The title also doesn’t come with immunity or any other power than to simply ensure the smooth running of the house and take charge of tasks in the house.
- Immunity challenge
This season also saw the introduction of the Immunity challenge. The pairs compete in the challenge to win immunity for the week. This saves them from nominations and possible eviction that week.
- Custodian title and challenge
Another twist this season is the introduction of the Custodian Title and challenge. The housemates compete in a challenge after every Sunday eviction show and the winners get immunity from nomination and possible eviction for the week. The Custodians also get powers which they get to exercise during eviction.
- Nomination and eviction process
In previous seasons, housemates enter the Diary room one after the other to nominate housemates they want to put up for eviction, then viewers vote to keep their favourite housemates in the house and the nominated housemates with the lowest votes get evicted. This season, the pairs have not been to the Diary room to put their fellow housemates or pairs up for eviction but to vote for the pair they want to immediately evict. After the Immunity challenge on Monday August 5, Big Brother announced that all housemates excluding the Custodians, Streeze, and winners of the Immunity challenge, Mbadiwe Twins, all other pairs have been nominated for possible eviction.
- Eviction on the first week
It is common knowledge that Big Brother doesn’t evict housemates in the first week of the season, but this time, Team Tami - Toyosi and Dami, got evicted after spending just one week on the show.
These twists have generated mixed reactions from housemates and viewers alike. However entertaining the show is, there is no doubt that the twists will change the dynamics of how the game is played. The hustle to be the Head of House will be less competitive while housemates will most likely channel their energy towards winning the Custodian Challenge or the Immunity challenge. Remaining in the house is definitely more important than being Biggie’s errand boy or girl, except for those who desire the privacy the Head of House condo affords. In this season, there’s no doubt that housemates will have to re-strategise for the unpredictable game ahead of them. The twists have kept housemates on their toes and viewers on the edge of their seats as we all watch the season unfold.
BBNaija Season 9: Toyosi opens up on needing space, won’t continue living with Dami
Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that Toyosi, one of the recently evicted Tami pair, has revealed that she will not continue living with Dami and would love to have some time apart after their eviction from the Big Brother Naija house.
Toyosi said this in an exclusive interview with the show’s host, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu on Monday, August 5. She revealed that Dami has been blaming herself for their eviction, a sentiment which she doesn’t share, and she would love to give Dami some time to absorb herself of the guilt she’s feeling.
