  • Here is a detailed guide on the application fee waiver and application process

The University of Alabama (UA) is one of the leading public research universities in the United States, attracting students from around the world. An exciting opportunity for prospective international students is the waived application fee currently offered by the university.

During select periods, UA allows students to apply without paying the standard application fee, making it more accessible for international students to pursue their academic goals.

Applicants are required to register for the GRAD Connect sessions to receive a waiver code. If eligible, you will receive an application fee waiver code via email.

TheRadar has compiled a guide on the steps of applying to UA as an international student, highlighting key details about the ongoing application fee waiver and other important considerations.

Eligibility

  • Bachelor’s Degree: For master’s programmes, a bachelor’s degree from a recognised institution is required.
  • International applicants are only eligible to use an application fee waiver for the Fall Semester 2025.
  • All international applicants must have an equivalent 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 GPA scale as determined by the UA Graduate School.
  • Some graduate programmes may require GRE or GMAT scores. Verify the specific requirements for your programme.
  • English Proficiency: The minimum scores for graduate admissions are generally: TOEFL (iBT): 79-80, IELTS: 6.5, and Duolingo English Test: 110.

Application process

1. Research and choose a programme: Visit the university’s website to explore degree options, course details, and faculty profiles. Knowing your programme of interest will also help you understand specific admission requirements.

2. Submit an application: Applications can be submitted online through the Graduate School Application Portal.

Required documents

International applicants must submit several important documents as part of their application. Be sure to prepare and organise the following:

1. Transcripts: Official copies of your secondary or post-secondary academic transcripts. Transcripts must be translated into English and may need to be evaluated by recognized agencies like WES (World Education Services) if required.

2. Standardised Test Scores: SAT/ACT for undergraduates or GRE/GMAT for graduate applicants.

3. Proof of English proficiency: TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo scores.

4. Letters of recommendation: These are required primarily for graduate students. Ensure that your referees send their recommendations directly to UA.

5. Statement of purpose: Graduate students need to submit a well-written statement explaining their academic background, research interests, and career goals.

6. Resume/CV: A resume detailing your academic and professional achievements (for graduate students).

7. Financial documents: To process your I-20 (required for a student visa), you’ll need to submit financial documentation proving your ability to support yourself during your studies.

Rules & reminders for the waiver

  • Applicants MUST use the same email address on the request form and graduate application.
  • One application fee waiver is allowed per student and will only be valid for a single application.
  • Applicants who wish to submit multiple applications must pay the application fee for any applications beyond the initial application. Multiple applications for the same program will cause a delay in processing.
