The Erasmus Mundus MESPOM Scholarship is one of the prestigious programs under the broader Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees (EMJMD) initiative funded by the European Union. 

MESPOM stands for Master of Science in Environmental Sciences, Policy, and Management, and it is designed to offer an interdisciplinary education that addresses the critical global challenges surrounding environmental sustainability. 

The 2025 MESPOM scholarship offers selected students the opportunity to study in multiple European universities, gaining a world-class environmental sciences and management education while benefiting from cross-cultural exposure.

The core institutions involved in the programme include:

1. Central European University (CEU) in Austria/Hungary

2. Lund University in Sweden

3. University of the Aegean in Greece

4. University of Manchester (UK)

Programme structure

The MESPOM programme is a two-year Master's degree, during which students study across different universities in the consortium. The typical structure includes:

Year 1: The fall and winter terms of the first year are hosted by Central European University (CEU, Vienna) and include an introductory module followed by advanced elective courses on contemporary environmental sustainability challenges and cross-cutting competencies. 

The spring term is hosted by the University of the Aegean (Lesvos, Greece) and includes environmental science courses related to land, water, ecosystem management and sustainable tourism. 

In summer, students take internships supervised by MESPOM faculty and hosted by Associated Partners or other organisations. 

Year 2: During the fall term of the second year, students study at the International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics at Lund University (Sweden), focusing on Environment, Industry and Products or at the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences of the University of Manchester (UK) focusing on Environment and Pollution Control. 

Thesis: The programme culminates in completing a Master’s thesis, often carried out in collaboration with international organisations, research institutes, or environmental agencies.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for the Erasmus Mundus MESPOM scholarship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

1. Academic background: Applicants should hold at least a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field. Strong academic performance is crucial.

2. English proficiency: Since the programme is conducted in English, applicants whose native language is not English must provide proof of proficiency (e.g., IELTS or TOEFL scores). Minimum required scores generally include an IELTS score of 6.5 or a TOEFL score 

3. Motivation letter: Applicants must submit a detailed statement of purpose outlining their motivations for joining the programme, career goals, and how the programme aligns with their personal and professional aspirations.

4. Letters of recommendation: Typically, two or three academic or professional references are required, providing insight into the applicant's academic abilities and potential for success in the programme.

5. Additional criteria: Some candidates may also need to demonstrate professional experience or relevant involvement in environmental projects, though this is not a strict requirement.

Application process

The application process for the Erasmus Mundus MESPOM Scholarship involves the following steps:

1. Online application: Applicants must complete an online application form available on the official MESPOM website. The application portal typically opens in the fall, and the deadline for the 2025 intake will likely be around January 2025.

2. Submission of documents: Applicants must submit the following documents:

  • A certified copy of their Bachelor's degree and transcripts.
  • Proof of English proficiency.
  • A motivation letter.
  • Letters of recommendation.
  • A CV highlighting academic and professional achievements.

3. Selection: The selection process is competitive and based on academic merit, motivation, and alignment with the program’s goals. Successful candidates will be notified by April or May 2025, with the academic year starting in September 2025.

Deadlines 

  • February 4, 2025: For individuals applying for Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters scholarships.
  • April 15, 2025: For self-financing applicants who are citizens of countries outside the EU/EEA area and require a study visa.
  • July 1, 2025: For self-financing applicants who are citizens of EU/EEA countries.

Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that the Australian Government Research Training Programme (RTP) Scholarship at the University of Sydney was open to international applicants, including Nigerians. 

The scholarship provides significant financial support to international students, helping them manage tuition fees, living expenses, and other research-related costs.
