The National Examination Council (NECO) has officially released the results of the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), bringing smiles to over 1.3 million candidates across Nigeria. The much-anticipated results were announced on Thursday, September 19, 2024, by NECO’s Registrar, Professor Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, during a press briefing at the Council's headquarters in Minna, Niger State.
2024 performance highlights
Wushushi disclosed that a total of 1,376,423 candidates registered for the exams, with males measuring 706,950 and females 669,473. He also added that 60.55 per cent of candidates secured five credits and above in English Language and Mathematics.
In his words, “The number of candidates that sat for the exam is 1,367,736, comprising 702,112 males and 665,624 females. The number of candidates with five credits and above, including English and Mathematics, is 828,284, representing 60.55%. The number of candidates with five credits and above, irrespective of English and Mathematics, is 1,147,597, representing 83.90%.”
In a positive turn for the credibility of the exams, NECO reported a significant drop in examination malpractice cases. Only 8,437 candidates were caught engaging in various forms of cheating, a 30.1% reduction from last year's figures. However, 40 schools have been flagged for mass cheating, and stern actions are being considered, including the possible de-recognition of a school in Ekiti.
“The number of candidates involved in various forms of malpractice in 2024 is 8,437, compared to 12,030 in 2023, indicating a reduction of 30.1%.
“During the conduct of the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination, 40 schools were found to have engaged in whole-school (mass) cheating in 17 states. They will be invited to the Council for discussion, after which appropriate sanctions will be applied. One school in Ekiti has been recommended for de-recognition for mass cheating in two core subjects and one Science subject.
“Similarly, 21 supervisors were recommended for blacklisting due to poor supervision, aiding and abetting, abscondment, extortion, drunkenness, and negligence in 12 states,” he stated.
In addition, he urged candidates who sat for the examination to visit the NECO website to access their results. “At this juncture, I wish to formally declare that the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination results are hereby released to the public. By this release, candidates can now access their results on the NECO website: www.neco.gov.ng using their examination registration number,” he said.

How to check 2024 NECO result
For those eagerly awaiting their results, the process is now simpler and more secure. NECO has replaced the traditional scratch card system with a token-based result-checking system, allowing students to check their results up to five times.
The information reads: “This is to inform the general public that henceforth our result checker token will be used to check a candidate’s result once (up to five times); i.e., you cannot use another token to check the same result again. Any further checks (of the same result) would require the use of the NECO E-Verify result verification portal to verify/confirm such results.”
The following steps should be followed:
1.Purchase your token
You will need to purchase a NECO Result Checking Token before checking your results. This token replaces the scratch card system previously used. You can buy the token online through the NECO Results website: https://results.neco.gov.ng/. You will click on ‘Purchase Token’. If you already have an account, log in with your email and password. If not, you will need to create an account by clicking on ‘Register’ and filling in your details. Once you have logged in, click on ‘Purchase Token’ again and follow the prompts to make your payment.
You have the option of paying with your debit card. After payment, your token will be made available under your account’s ‘My Tokens’ section.
2. Access the result portal
When your token is ready, you are set to check your results. You can access the 2024 NECO result-checking portal at https://results.neco.gov.ng/. You will see a form to fill out.
3. Enter your exam details and view your result
Carefully input the required details in the form. Select the Exam Year, e.g., 2024. Choose the Exam Type, such as SSCE Internal (JUN/JUL) or SSCE External (NOV/DEC), depending on which you participated in.
Then, enter your token number and type in your Examination/Registration Number in the specified field.
The final step is to click on the “Check My Result” button.
WAEC releases 2024 results, records worse performance than the previous year
Meanwhile, TheRadar previously reported that WAEC released 2024 results on August 12, with the performance of candidates worse than the previous year.
According to Dr Amos Dangut, The Head of the Nigerian National Office (HNO) of the council, out of 1,805, 216 that wrote the exam, 1,332,089 candidates have credits in five subjects including any subjects with either Mathematics or English language, and 1,301, 949 candidates got credits in five subjects including Mathematics and English language accounting for 72.9% of total candidates.
