The 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results released by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) indicated that the percentage of students who achieved credits or more in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, decreased to 72.12%, down from 79.81% in 2023 in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination.
The Head of the Nigerian National Office (HNO) of the council, Dr Amos Dangut, disclosed this during the announcement of the results for school candidates on Monday, August 12, in Lagos.
WAEC recorded 7.6% decrease in examination performance
He said, “WAEC is releasing its results today as out of 1,805, 216 that entered for exam, 1,332, 089 candidates have credits in five subjects including any subjects with either Mathematics or English language and 1,301, 949 candidates got credits in five subjects including Mathematics and English language accounting for 72.9% of total candidates.
“This is a 7.6% decrease in examination performance compared to last year of 2023 WASSCE. Also 215, 267 results were withheld due to examination malpractice by the candidates. This accounts for 11.92% of the total number of candidates who wrote the examination.”
According to Dangut, 93.39% of the 1,685,889 candidates who sat the examination in Nigeria have had their results fully processed and released, while 6.61% (119,327 candidates) are still awaiting results for one or more subjects due to due to certain issues being resolved.
215,267 candidates’ results were withheld due to unresolved issues
The HNO revealed that the results of 215,267 candidates, accounting for 11.92% of those who took the examination, are being withheld due to various reported cases of examination malpractice.
This shows a 4.37% reduction from the 16.29% observed in the 2023 WASSCE for school candidates.
He emphasized that the increasing use of cell phones in exam halls, in violation of the ban, and the organised cheating occurring in some schools, are pressing issues. He added that investigations are ongoing, and the reports will be submitted to the relevant council committee for final decisions.

Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that Professor Tahir Mamman, the Minister of Education, disclosed that the FG has returned four million out-of-school children to their classrooms through the DOTS initiative.
The Minister emphasised that universities are essential for the growth of both the nation and industry, and highlighted that the current level of collaboration between tertiary institutions and universities is still insufficient.
