President Bola Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new campus of the Police Academy in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The President also approved a special take-off grant of N15 billion for the new institution.

The approval is in line with the provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021, which allows for the expansion of the Police Academy in Wudil, Kano State, into multiple campuses across the country.

According to a statement issued on Monday, April 20, by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the intervention fund will come from the 2026 TetFund allocation.

The money is expected to cover key areas such as infrastructure, academic buildings, student hostels, and training facilities.

“The intervention fund will be sourced from the TetFund 2026 allocation to finance priority infrastructure, academic facilities, student accommodation, and core training assets,” the statement said.

The decision to site the new campus in Erinja followed the recommendation of a high-level consultative meeting involving the Minister of Police Affairs, the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, officials of the Federal Ministry of Education, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission.

The meeting reportedly examined issues including student intake capacity, funding realities, academic quality assurance, and the growing manpower needs of the Nigeria Police Force.

“A high-level consultative meeting involving the Minister of Police Affairs, the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, officials of the Federal Ministry of Education, the Inspector-General of Police and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC) recommended the siting of the new campus in Erinja,” the statement noted.
It further stated that the meeting considered “student intake capacity, funding realities, academic quality assurance, and the long-term needs of the Nigerian Police Force, which is currently recruiting more men.”

The Presidency said the expansion is expected to strengthen police training, institutional governance, and national security.

“President Tinubu believes the expansion will strengthen institutional governance, modern policing education and national security,” it added.

The approval comes months after Tinubu declared a nationwide security emergency and authorised fresh recruitment into the Nigeria Police Force in response to rising insecurity, kidnappings, and attacks across the country.

As part of the security measures announced in late 2025, the President approved the recruitment of an additional 20,000 police officers and ordered the upgrade of police training facilities nationwide.

Tinubu also directed that some NYSC camps be used as temporary police training depots and ordered the withdrawal of police personnel from VIP protection duties so they could be redeployed to security-challenged areas.

Tinubu approves YABATECH’s upgrade to university

Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that President Bola Tinubu had given the green light for Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) to transition into a university.

The Minister of Education, Doctor Tunji Alausa, revealed that Tinubu swiftly endorsed the proposal, emphasising his commitment to enhancing education for Nigerian youths.

He noted that the only remaining steps were formal documentation and procedural approvals from relevant authorities.
