President Bola Tinubu has appointed Professor Segun Aina as the new Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), marking a major leadership transition at Nigeria’s foremost tertiary admissions body.

Aina will succeed Professor Ishaq Oloyede, whose tenure as registrar is scheduled to end on 31 July 2026 after years of widely recognised reforms within the examination board.

The appointment was announced on Thursday in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. The Presidency described Aina as an accomplished academic and systems expert with extensive experience in digital infrastructure, institutional reform and examination administration.

According to the statement, Aina is currently a professor of Computer Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, where he has built a reputation in the areas of technology systems, cybersecurity and digital transformation.

The Presidency noted that the incoming registrar, who will turn 40 in July, is expected to become the youngest person ever appointed to lead JAMB. The statement also described him as one of Nigeria’s youngest professors in the field of Computer Engineering.

Aina studied Computer Systems Engineering at the University of Kent in the United Kingdom, where he obtained his Bachelor of Engineering degree. He later earned a Master’s degree in Internet Computing and Network Security as well as a doctorate in Digital Signal Processing from Loughborough University. He also completed the Senior Management Programme at Lagos Business School.

The Federal Government said Aina brings more than 15 years of experience in advising both federal and state governments on digital transition policies, systems design and institutional reforms. His work has reportedly focused on improving efficiency, transparency and technological integration within public institutions.

Before his appointment, Aina also served as a consultant to several examination bodies, including the National Examinations Council (NECO) and the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB). His contributions were particularly centred on ICT systems, examination integrity and digital security frameworks.

The statement further highlighted his membership of several professional bodies, including the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, the Nigerian Society of Engineers, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the Institution of Engineering and Technology.

President Tinubu expressed confidence that the new registrar would sustain and expand the reforms introduced under Oloyede’s leadership. During Oloyede’s tenure, JAMB gained public recognition for improvements in examination monitoring, digital operations and transparency in admissions processes.

The Presidency said Aina is expected to leverage his expertise and practical knowledge to further strengthen the operations of JAMB and enhance the credibility of Nigeria’s tertiary admissions system.
