President Bola Tinubu has appointed Professor Segun Aina as the new Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), succeeding Professor Is-haq Oloyede, whose tenure ends on 31 July 2026.
Aina’s appointment has generated significant interest due to his relatively young age—he turns 40 in July—and his rapid rise through Nigeria’s academic, technology, and public policy sectors. Below are key things to know about him.
He trained entirely in the United Kingdom
Aina built his academic foundation in the United Kingdom, where he studied across two leading universities. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Kent in 2008 before proceeding to Loughborough University for his postgraduate studies.
At Loughborough, he obtained a Master’s degree in Internet Computing and Network Security in 2009 and later completed a PhD in Digital Signal Processing. He also returned to Nigeria to complete a Senior Management Programme at the Lagos Business School, strengthening his leadership training.
He started his career at JAMB
Interestingly, Aina’s early professional exposure to JAMB came during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) placement, where he first worked with the examination body. That experience, according to the State House, gave him early insight into Nigeria’s admissions system and large-scale data management.
He became a professor at 39
Aina was appointed Professor of Computer Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, at the age of 39, making him one of the youngest professors in his field in Nigeria. His promotion was based on academic output, leadership contributions, and efforts to bridge research with practical technological solutions.
He has advised government institutions
With over 15 years of professional experience, Aina has worked as a consultant to both federal and state institutions. His advisory roles have included engagements with the Job Creation Unit in the Office of the Vice President and several subnational governments, focusing on digital transformation and institutional reform.
He has worked with major examination bodies
Beyond JAMB, Aina has also consulted for the National Examinations Council (NECO) and the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB), as well as various state education ministries. His work has centred on ICT systems, examination integrity, and digital process improvement.
He co-founded a technology firm
In 2010, he co-founded Fluid Click Solutions Ltd, an IT services and engineering project management company. The firm operates across several sectors, including education technology, agriculture, hospitality, and vocational training.
He belongs to major engineering bodies
Aina is a member of several professional organisations, including the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, the Nigerian Society of Engineers, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the Institution of Engineering and Technology. He has also authored about 30 peer-reviewed academic papers.
With his appointment, Aina is set to become JAMB’s youngest-ever registrar, bringing a blend of academic excellence, industry experience, and public sector advisory work to one of Nigeria’s most critical education institutions.
