The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced a planned electricity outage that will affect five states in Northern Nigeria as well as parts of the neighbouring Niger Republic, as the company undertakes scheduled maintenance work on a major transmission line.

In a statement issued on Saturday, TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah disclosed that the temporary blackout is necessary to facilitate annual maintenance on the Mando–Kumbotso 330kV Transmission Line. The maintenance exercise is scheduled to take place on Sunday, 31 May 2026.

According to the company, the outage is part of efforts to ensure the reliability and efficiency of the national transmission network by addressing a fault identified along the transmission corridor.

TCN explained that its maintenance crew will carry out repairs on a damaged Red Phase Conductor located on Tower T187 along the Mando–Kumbotso transmission route. The agency noted that the repair work is essential to prevent further technical issues and maintain the integrity of electricity supply infrastructure in the region.

“The outage is necessary to enable TCN’s maintenance crew to amend a damaged Red Phase Conductor on Tower T187 along the line route,” the statement read.

As a result of the maintenance exercise, the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) will be unable to receive electricity from the transmission network and distribute power to customers within its coverage area during the scheduled period.

The affected areas include Kano, Katsina and Jigawa states, as well as parts of Bauchi and Yobe states. In addition, electricity consumers in Gazaoua, located in the Niger Republic, are also expected to experience a temporary interruption in power supply.

“Consequently, Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) will be unable to off-take electricity to its customers across Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa States, as well as parts of Bauchi and Yobe States; customers in Gazaoua (Niger Republic) would also be affected by the outage,” TCN stated.

The company indicated that the maintenance work is expected to commence at 9:00 a.m. and conclude by 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. However, TCN did not provide a specific timeline for the restoration of electricity to affected communities once the exercise is completed.

The announcement comes amid ongoing concerns over electricity supply challenges in Nigeria, where consumers frequently experience outages due to infrastructure constraints, maintenance activities and technical faults within the power sector.

Residents and businesses in the affected states have been advised to make necessary arrangements ahead of the planned interruption, while TCN assured the public that the maintenance work is aimed at improving the long-term stability and reliability of electricity transmission across the region.

Industry observers say such preventive maintenance exercises remain critical to reducing unexpected system failures and enhancing the performance of the national grid, particularly in areas heavily dependent on a single transmission corridor for electricity supply.
