Ajeromi Ifelodun’s Primary Health Care (PHC) centre became a focal point for social media debate.A primary healthcare center built by a local council at Ajeromi Ifelodun, Lagos stirred praise and political debates online.
  • Ajeromi Ifelodun Primary Health Care (PHC) was reportedly funded entirely by its Internally Generated Revenue, sparking both admiration and criticism online
  • The primary health centre featured tuberculosis care, dental clinics, a pharmacy, laboratory, and more
  • The project has sparked discussions on local governance, and leadership comparisons on social media

A Primary Health Care (PHC) centre in the Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State has recently sparked widespread praise and political debate on social media.

The two-story, health care facility, which aimed to serve an estimated 5,000 people across five local councils, included a tuberculosis care department, eye and dental clinics, a pharmacy, a medical laboratory, an X-ray unit, ultrasound services, a children’s immunisation centre, and maternity services.

Lagos LCDA builds health centre with local funds

Reacting to the initiative, an X (formerly Twitter) user highlighted the project, noting that it was neither a federal nor state initiative but rather a local effort by the LCDA chairman.

The user also posed a rhetorical question about whether former Governor Peter Obi had undertaken any similar projects during his tenure.

“Check this inside......❤️🥰 This is neither federal nor state project. This is a world class Primary Healthcare Centre built by a LG council Chairman in ajeromi Ifelodun LCDA in Lagos State. Did Peter Obi build any when he was Governor??🏃🏃,” A. Ayofe stated.

The health centre, named after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was fully financed through the LCDA's Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) under the leadership of Honourable Fatai Ajidagba, the then chairman of Ajeromi Ifelodun LCDA.

Honourable Ajidagba explained that the project was undertaken in response to requests from the local residents during the commissioning of the project.

He said, “I stand today in fulfillment of our electoral promises of making life more meaningful for our people. We are indeed very delighted Ifelodun LCDA is able to show the entire world developmental projects that have direct and positive impact on the lives of the people.

“The impact and benefit of this health centre will not only be felt by the people in our LCDA alone, but also residents of six other local council around us will benefit from the services that will be provided here. This prompted us to name this edifice as Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu Comprehensive Health Centre.”

The project which has since been commissioned by the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu in February 2021 recently triggered a broader conversation about local governance, infrastructure development, and the role of political leaders in shaping their communities' welfare.

Some users drew comparisons to other regional leaders' actions. An X user, Tunde Akerele criticised Peter Obi, claiming he spent his tenure purchasing cars for traditional rulers rather than focusing on infrastructure or local governance.

“No, PETER OBI did not build any, he bought 400 SUVs for Igwes and he did not organise any local government election throughout his 8 years as a governor,” Tunde Akerele stated.

Another X user pointed out the perceived priorities of some governors, saying “While some governors are sponsoring marriages and distribution of wheel barrows.”
