To continue our series on ‘Know Your Lawmakers,’ this edition focuses on the representatives of Lagos State in the Senate Chambers for the period between 2023 and 2027.
Lagos State has three senatorial districts: Lagos Central, Lagos West, and Lagos East. Each district is represented by one senator, shaping national policies, and contributing to the economic and social development of the state.
These senators serve as the voice of the people of Lagos, advocating for policies that foster growth and ensuring that their constituents' concerns are addressed in national matters.
TheRadar compiled the three senators representing the state’s senatorial districts below:
1. Oluranti Idiat Adebule (Lagos West Senatorial District)
Doctor Idiat Oluranti Adebule assumed office as the Senator representing Lagos West on June 13, 2023, succeeding Solomon Adeola.
Before her election to the Senate, Adebule served as the Deputy Governor of Lagos State from May 29, 2015, to May 29, 2019, under Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.
Her political career began with her appointment as Commissioner 1 in the Lagos State Post Primary Teaching Service Commission.
She later served as a board member of the Lagos State Scholarship Board and as the Secretary to the State Government before becoming Deputy Governor.
As part of her efforts to support her constituents, Senator Adebule launched a program to train 1,000 youths from the Lagos West district in five vocational skills.
The training focused on leatherwork, confectionery, fashion designing, barbing, and hairdressing, to equip beneficiaries with skills to enhance their economic prospects.
“Our focus is to train 1,000 youths in Lagos West to be proficient in the listed vocational skills before the end of 2024. On completion of the training, the beneficiaries will be supported with starter packs to make their introduction to the League of Employers of Labour seamless,” she stated.
2. Sanni Wasiu Eshilokun (Lagos Central Senatorial District)
Wasiu Eshilokun Sanni assumed office as the senator for Lagos State Central on June 13, 2023, succeeding Oluremi Tinubu.
Sanni's political career began in the Lagos State House of Assembly, where he represented the Lagos Island I constituency from June 1999 to June 2003. He also served as the Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly from June 8, 2015, until June 4, 2023.
In his efforts to support the community, Sanni launched a scholarship scheme for indigent students in Lagos Island. In the 2022/2023 academic year, 85 qualified students from the region received full undergraduate scholarships. The initiative was aimed at assisting parents in securing a brighter future for their children.
“This is not just a renewal of the social contract between the people and the elected, but a show of repositioning of trust Let me restate our commitment that we shall not let you down.
“From my efforts at the local government on education through the building and rehabilitation of schools and vocational centres; our Free Jamb Form initiative; free school buss services, to this scholarship scheme, among others, our aim is to make education not just appealing but also affordable to all our willing children.
“Let me reiterate, we shall do even more than before,” Senator Sanni stated in part.
3. Adetokunbo Mukhail Abiru (Lagos East Senatorial District)
Tokunbo Abiru, the Senator for Lagos East in the Nigerian National Assembly, is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Abiru resigned from his banking career in August 2020 to run for the Lagos East senatorial seat, which he successfully won.
In August 2023, he was appointed Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking. Before his banking career, Abiru held executive roles at First Bank Nigeria Ltd and served as the Honourable Commissioner for Finance in Lagos State from 2011 to 2013.
While showcasing his achievements to his constituents, he said in part, “For the past 24 months, we have been able to record modest achievements with the profound support of our people and indeed our great party. Within this period, we have been able to touch lives directly and indirectly; sponsored and co-sponsored bills and motions of national significance and provide support for our people in Epe, Ikorodu, Ibeju/Lekki, Kosofe and Somolu Local Government Areas, especially at the time of critical needs and national emergencies.”
He added, “Under legislation, for instance, we sponsored 13 private member bills; co-sponsored three other bills and moved two motions on issues of national importance. Of note among these bills are Copyright Bill, 2021 and Franchise Regulation Bill 2022. When finally enacted, these legislations will be catalysts for revamping Nigeria’s creative economy; strengthening the country’s macro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and empowering a teeming number of our youths to effectively operate in the digital environment.”
