The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, in collaboration with Huawei Technologies, has introduced four new Intelligent Transport System (ITS) sites designed to monitor speed violations and enhance traffic management.

Subsequently, some motorists and residents raised concerns, alleging that the initiative was more focused on revenue generation than improving road safety.

Lagos government clarifies enforcement of speed limit monitors

In response to these claims, Bolanle Ogunlola, the Director of Public Affairs in the Ministry of Transportation, dismissed the allegations, stating that reports suggesting widespread enforcement of the speed limit monitors were false and misleading.

“The claims circulating on social media are incorrect. Cameras have not been deployed across all the locations listed. Enforcement is currently limited to two roads as a pilot phase before expanding to other areas,” she stated.

During the announcement of the ITS, the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, highlighted that the new systems would complement the existing Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and other traffic management technologies in the state.

Lagos introduces fines for traffic violations

Osiyemi explained that the new checkpoint sites were strategically placed to curb overspeeding, one of the leading causes of road accidents. “The checkpoint sites are designed to detect overspeeding,” he said.
“One is located at Alapere, Ogudu Road, with a speed limit of 80km/h, while the other is installed at Nitel, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, with a speed limit of 60km/h.”

In addition to the checkpoint sites, two e-police monitoring stations were installed at Allen Avenue Junction and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road.

The stations were equipped to detect a variety of traffic violations, including running red lights, failure to comply with lane discipline, illegal U-turns, and reverse driving on highways. “These e-police sites are designed to detect a wide range of traffic violations,” Osiyemi added.

The Commissioner urged motorists to comply with traffic regulations, warning that violators would face substantial fines. A fine of N20,000 will be imposed for running a red light while speeding beyond the designated limit will result in a N50,000 penalty.

"Enforcement will commence immediately,” he emphasised, noting that motorists who violate traffic laws would receive SMS notifications detailing the violation and the fine.
“This system is not designed to be punitive but to encourage responsible driving behaviour and reduce the rate of accidents on our roads,” Osiyemi stated.
“The goal is simple: to save lives, protect property, and create an orderly transportation environment.”
