To continue our series on ‘Know Your Lawmakers,’ this edition focuses on the representatives of Osun State in the Senate Chambers for the period between 2023 and 2027.

Osun State has three senatorial districts with each district represented by one senator. These senators contribute to the economic and social development of the state.

They serve as the voice of the people, advocating for policies that foster growth and ensuring that their constituents' concerns are addressed in national matters.

TheRadar profiled the three senators representing the state’s senatorial districts below:

1. Oyewumi Kamorudeen Olalere (Osun West Senatorial District)

Lere Oyewumi, the current senator for Osun State’s West senatorial district is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and he assumed office on June 13, 2023, following the term of Adelere Adeyemi Oriolowo.

Before his political career, Oyewumi worked as an education officer in the Federal Ministry of Education and later ventured into the private sector. His political journey began in 1992 when he was elected to the House of Representatives under the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Over the years, he has held several key positions in Osun State, including serving as the chairman of Irewole Local Government and as a prominent member of the PDP.

In 2024, Oyewumi, who currently serves as the Deputy Minority Leader of the Senate, reassured his constituents of his commitment to quality representation and the timely delivery of democratic benefits.

This promise was made during an inspection tour of several roads in Okinni, Egbedore Local Government. The tour covered Olomowewe Road, Young Tajudeen Primary School, Winners Chapel Church, Palace Road, and other areas.

During the tour, Senator Oyewumi expressed his dedication to ensuring the rehabilitation and upgrading of these roads, aiming to improve accessibility and enhance the living standards of residents in Osun West.

2. Fadahunsi Adenigba Francis (Osun East Senatorial District)

Senator Fadahunsi Adenigba Francis, a retired Customs officer, represents Osun East in the National Assembly’s Senate. His career in public service began with the Nigeria Customs before transitioning to politics.

As part of his empowerment initiatives, Senator Fadahunsi distributed motorcycles to members of his constituency, part of a larger effort in which items worth over N500 million were procured for their benefit.

The senator also promised to distribute additional items such as buses, grinding machines, soap-making machines, and other tools aimed at enhancing productivity within the community.

The beneficiaries of this program were drawn from the ten local government areas that make up the Osun East senatorial district, reflecting Senator Fadahunsi’s broad outreach to his constituents.

3. Fadeyi-Ajagunla Oluwole Olubiyi (Osun Central Senatorial District)

Senator Fadeyi-Ajagunla Olubiyi, a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), represents the Osun Central Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate.

Fadeyi-Ajagunla emerged victorious in the February 25, 2023, Senate election and has continued to make education a priority in his legislative work.

He distributed N50 million in bursaries to over 1,000 students from both public and private tertiary institutions across Nigeria in 2024. Addressing the beneficiaries, Senator Fadeyi-Ajagunla, popularly known as Ajagunla, explained that the bursary was part of his dedication to advancing education in the region.

The bursary initiative was open to students who were indigenes of the 10 local governments in the Osun Central district. He urged the students to use the funds wisely and remain focused on their studies, emphasising that education is a powerful tool for driving societal change.

“It is about giving back to the society, through human capital development for the students, which we started last year. Last year, we had a tertiary bursary award for fresh students, final year undergraduates, Masters and Ph.D. students, as well as about 650 students whom we gave scholarships. We can see that our Governor has been doing tremendously well in the area of education and this is to support him.
“The programme is out of my passion for the development of the students. I grew up in an environment that valued education and this is why I am deeply committed to education. I want to urge the students not to divert this financial support but use it exactly, for the intended purpose.
“The truth is that education will forever remain golden and we must all, as young people, take it seriously,” Senator Olubiyi stated.
