To continue our series on ‘Know Your Lawmakers,’ this edition focuses on the representatives of Ogun State in the Senate Chambers for the period between 2023 and 2027.

Ogun State has three senatorial districts: Ogun Central, Ogun West, and Ogun East. Each district is represented by one senator, shaping national policies, and contributing to the economic and social development of the state.

These senators serve as the voice of the people of Ogun, advocating for policies that foster growth and ensuring that their constituents' concerns are addressed in national matters

TheRadar compiled the three senators representing the state’s senatorial districts below:

1. Salisu Shuaib Afolabi (Ogun Central Senatorial District)

Salisu Shuaib Afolabi is the current senator representing Ogun State’s Central district in the 10th National Assembly, and he’s a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

As part of his contributions to the nation’s development, Senator Afolabi advocated for a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria's pension administration and management system to restore public confidence and trust.

In his keynote address at the launch of the book “Understanding Pension Administration and Management in the Contemporary World,” authored by Dr Imran Saheed Adekunle, Head of the Internal Audit Unit at the Pension Transition Arrangement Directorate (PTAD), the senator emphasised the need for reform.

Afolabi, who chairs the Senate Committee on ICT and Cyber Security, noted that while President Bola Tinubu's administration is pursuing various reforms, both the government and relevant stakeholders must prioritise the pension system, improving it significantly.

He believed that Nigerians will only trust and feel secure in the system when they are assured of reliable pensions and social security. The senator urged all key stakeholders in the pension sector to read the book and engage in discussions about how to elevate the country’s pension management to the next level.

Additionally, Senator Afolabi expressed concern over the growing trend of cybercrimes among Nigerian youth, acknowledging the disturbing reality that some young people are using social media for illegal activities.

He called for collective responsibility in nation-building, urging Nigerians to play an active role in their spheres of influence rather than leaving the task solely to politicians.

2. Adeola Solomon Olamilekan (Ogun West Senatorial District)

Solomon Adeola is the current Senator representing Ogun West in the National Assembly. He previously served as the representative for Lagos West from 2015 to 2023.

Among the projects facilitated by the Senator are several infrastructure developments in the Imeko-Afon, Yewa South, and Yewa North Local Government Areas.

Notable projects include the construction of the Ilara Ultra-modern Market, the establishment of the Iwoye Police Station, and the development of a Primary Health Centre at the General Hospital in Imeko.

In addition, Adeola supported the building of an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Centre at Nazareth High School and the construction of two 12-classroom blocks; one at Imeko Comprehensive College and another at Community High School in Afon.

The development of Afon Township Road and the Owode Afon Ultra-modern Townhall is also part of his efforts to improve the living standards of his constituents.

3. Olugbenga Justus Daniel (Ogun East Senatorial District)

Senator Gbenga Daniel currently represents the Ogun East Senatorial District in Nigeria's 10th Senate as a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Daniel served as the governor of Ogun State from 2003 to 2011. He began his tenure as a senator on June 13, 2023, succeeding Ramoni Olalekan Mustapha.

As part of his legislative efforts, he presented a motion on July 5, 2023, titled “Urgent Need to Intervene in the Flooding Issues in Sagamu, Ijebu Areas of Ogun East Senatorial District, Ogun State.”

This came as a response to numerous complaints about flooding in his constituency and the motion prompted a visit from officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), who provided relief materials to the affected areas.

He also introduced the South West Development Commission Bill, which successfully passed its second reading on February 21, 2024, among other legislative moves.
