The Kano Emirates Council Law, which dissolved the five Emirates in Kano State, has been overturned by a Federal High Court in Kano. The Federal High Court declared the dethronement of the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, and four others illegal.
The presiding judge, Justice Abdullahi Muhammad Liman, while giving his ruling on Thursday, June 20, set aside the action of the Kano government, and ordered all the parties involved to maintain status quo.
In Liman words, “I hereby order that every step taken by the government is hereby nullified and becomes null and invalid and that this does not affect the validity of the repealed Emirates Law but actions taken by the governor which include the assenting to the law and the reappointment of Sanusi."
Recall that the Kano House of Assembly nullified the law establishing the 15th Emir and creating four new emirate councils: Bichi, Rano Karaye, Gaya, and Rano Karaye by Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, the immediate past governor of Kano.
To reinstate Muhammadu Sanusi, the removed 14th Emir of Kano, the current administration led by Abba Kabir Yusuf dethroned Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero as Emir of Kano following the nullifying of the law established by the Ganduje government.
Nigerians react to court’s reinstatement of Ado Bayero
Nigerians took to social media to express their thoughts regarding the court ruling on the Kano emirate saga.
“I told you guys that Kano state Governor and State Assembly are wasting their time! Alhaji Amino Ado Bayero remains the Emir of Kano! You don’t wake up one morning and remove an Emir without due process of investigation! Sanusi was investigated before removal! That’s the Law!,” Henry MD (Don P) commented on X.
“Wawu! Let's see if the law of the land will be obeyed. Personally, I wouldn't want traditional affairs to be determined by the court of competent jurisdiction or higher. Our cultural tradition needs to be protected devoid of any political interference,” Arakunrin Olabisi ACIPM also mentioned on X.
"We are happy and delighted with this ruling. Allah ya taimaki sarki Aminu ado Bayero,” MaHMud Waziri added on X.
"Finally game of thrones has come to an end!!! This kano people get doings sha,” Fareeda Kiri also expressed.
"Hope this traditional kerfuffle doesn’t ruin the fragile peace in Kano,” Imonokha Enakhena (Prof) expressed his thought on X.
"I’m sure after the tenure of the present governor, another one will come in and dethrone the one installed by this president governor, what a joke,” Kotosiaface mentioned on X.
