Six exceptional scholars from the University of Ibadan (UI) have been awarded full scholarships to pursue doctoral degrees, in recognition of their outstanding performance during their Master’s programmes. They were among the 2,868 graduands celebrated at the university’s 76th Convocation and Founder’s Day ceremonies which took place from November 13 to November 18, 2024.

The six honourees, unveiled on the third day of the event, achieved an extraordinary Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) exceeding 7.00. Among them were Ayomide Adepoju Esther and Abiodun Oyeleye, alongside four other distinguished individuals. Their scholarships, sponsored by the University of Ibadan, reflect the institution’s dedication to rewarding academic brilliance.

During his address at the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode Adebowale, highlighted the university’s commitment to excellence in postgraduate education and research. He remarked, “UI, through its Postgraduate College, has consistently mediated excellence in postgraduate and research, producing the highest level of manpower in Nigeria, West Africa, and the African continent.”

Expounding on the institution’s academic initiatives, he added, “Our Postgraduate College has, over the years, organised a series of interdisciplinary discourses delivered by distinguished personalities of the academic and business world, both within and outside Nigeria, to share their experiences with the University of Ibadan on the broad theme of education and national development.”

Professor Adebowale also commended the college for being “A major driving force to transform research and postgraduate institutions,” while celebrating the achievements of UI staff and students. “Some of our staff and students have distinguished themselves both nationally and internationally through their remarkable contributions to knowledge,” he noted.

Addressing the graduates, the Vice-Chancellor expressed his pride in their accomplishments. “Your achievement is a testament to your perseverance and dedication. Having earned a postgraduate degree in this era, you are now entrusted with the responsibility of contributing to the revitalisation of our nation’s economy and society with the knowledge and skills you have gained,” he said.

He further urged them to embrace creativity and innovation in tackling the challenges ahead. “Be good ambassadors of this university no matter where life takes you. It is my sincere hope that you will go on and make a positive impact in the various sectors of Nigeria’s economy for growth and development,” Professor Adebowale concluded.

Meanwhile, TheRadar previously reported the viral reactions from netizens that greeted a lady who bagged multiple awards upon her graduation from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. 

Identified as Aneke Chinwendu, the lady graduated as the Best Graduating Student in Microbiology with multiple awards which she highlighted on her Instagram page.
