President Tinubu just signed off on one of the biggest military expansions this administration has done. 28,000 new Army recruits, four new divisions, and a whole new command structure.

On Thursday, July 23, the Presidency announced that President Tinubu has approved the expansion of the Nigerian Army from 8 divisions to 12.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, dropped the statement, and he didn't waste time to explain the "why."

According to the statement, the goal is to:

• Decentralise command and control
• Strengthen border security
• Protect critical national infrastructure better
• Speed up response time to attacks and kidnappings nationwide

But the number that got everybody talking is the 28,000 additional personnel approved for recruitment.

Why is this happening now?

You don't have to be a security analyst to know that Nigeria has been battling with serious insecurity; banditry in the North-West, kidnapping on major highways, herder-farmer clashes in the Middle Belt, and insurgency that still lingers in the North-East.

The current 8-division structure has become too stretched. One division can be covering states that are too far apart, and that can slow down response time when trouble occurs.

So this expansion is Tinubu's attempt to bring the Army closer to where the problems are, instead of soldiers rushing from faraway barracks anytime something happens.

There's also a welfare and equipment angle to this, the same statement mentioned improved troop welfare, acquisition of new military platforms, and continued force modernisation.

The 4 new divisions

This is the part that concerns your state directly. New divisional headquarters will spring up for:

• Makurdi (Benue)
• Ilorin (Kwara)
• Jalingo (Taraba)
• Benin City (Edo)

Phase 1 vs Phase 2: The timeline you need to know

• Phase 1: establishment of the 5, 9, and 10 Divisions plus reorganisation of existing formations, planned to be completed by September 2026.
• Phase 2: establishment of the 83 Division plus further restructuring, targeted to be completed by December 2026.

So by 2027, Nigeria will officially have a 12-division Army for the first time.

The Chief of Army Staff overseeing all this is Lt. Gen. Waidi Ibrahim Shuaibu, who Tinubu commended for "dedication and professionalism" in the statement.

The 3 main routes

1. Regular Recruits Intake (RRI) for non-officer soldiers, ages typically 18–22 for non-tradesmen, up to 26 for tradesmen.

2. Short Service Combatant (SSC) for graduates wanting a commissioned officer path.

3. Direct Short Service Commission (DSSC) for professionals (doctors, engineers, lawyers etc.) with relevant degrees and want to join as officers in their specialty.
