Nigerian Afrobeats artistes, Tems and Ayra Starr have emerged at the top of the Global Impact List unveiled by popular streaming platform Spotify for the first half of 2024.
Making the announcement in Lagos, on July 11, Spotify’s Head of Music, Sub-Saharan Africa, Phiona Okimu noted that Afrobeats continues to impact the global space.
In her words, Nigerian music, especially Afrobeats, has captivated global audiences with its infectious rhythms, compelling storytelling and innovative sound fusions. Its ability to transcend cultural and geographical boundaries is truly remarkable. At Spotify, we are thrilled to witness and support the continued evolution of this vibrant scene.
According to Okumu, the recent list spotlighted 30 popular Nigerian Afrobeats stars who have the biggest global reach and impact on Spotify.
Through their songs, these artistes were recognized by the streaming platform. Their songs, according to spotify, have the most listens from outside Nigeria between January 1 to June 30.
Ayra Starr secured the first and second spot with her songs Santa featuring Rauw Alexrandro and hit single Commas. On the other hand, Tems took third spot with Love me Jeje.
Another Vibe by Omah Lay and Luciano came in fourth place followed by Just Like me by Burnaboy, 21 Savage and Metro Booming in fifth place.
The Global Impact list also showcased the ever growing International collaborations among Nigerian Afrobeats stars. It features global acts like Usher, 21 Savage, Metro Boomin, Chris Brown, Giveon, demonstrating the cross-cultural appeal that Afrobeats offers as a genre.
