Since the establishment of Ondo state in 1976, 19 different leaders have governed the State, spanning military and democratic backgrounds.

As the state prepares for its 2024 gubernatorial election set to take place on Saturday, November 16, let's take a look at the first military and civilian governors who have led the Sunshine State of the nation.

Ita David Ikpeme, first military governor of Ondo (1976-1978)

Ita David Ikpeme served as the first military governor of Ondo State, from February 3, 1976, to July 24, 1978. He was a retired group captain in the Nigerian Air Force.

He became governor after Ondo State was carved out of the former Western State during the military era led by General Olusegun Obasanjo.

During his tenure, he began road development in Akure, the capital of Ondo State. However, Ikpeme was accused of involvement in a conspiracy to overthrow General Ibrahim Babangida’s military government in December 1985.

Ikpeme shifted to business after retiring from the Air Force, engaging in several ventures and notably co-owning Bailey Bridges Nigeria.

Michael Adekunle Ajasin,  first civilian governor of Ondo state (1979 - 1983)

As the first civilian governor of Ondo State, Nigeria, Michael Adekunle Ajasin governed from October 1, 1979, to December 31, 1983, under the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN).

Ajasin's governorship was marked by a significant focus on education in Ondo State. He sought to ensure that every child had educational opportunities by creating Ondo State University and launching the Polytechnic in Owo.

In addition to his focus on education, Ajasin was a passionate advocate of democracy in Nigeria. His contributions to both fields have cemented his legacy as a hero who worked diligently to enhance the lives of the people in Ondo State.
