The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has launched a new emergency reporting and response application, VIGISCOPE, designed to enhance security in schools across Nigeria.
The app, which aims to provide a swift and coordinated response in times of crisis, was introduced at the conclusion of a two-day seminar held from November 26 to 27, 2024, marking the inauguration of the Safe School Protection Squad.
In a statement on Thursday, November 28, Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, explained that VIGISCOPE is an advanced alert system connected to a central base in Abuja.
The app allows school authorities such as principals and students to report emergencies or request immediate assistance via their smartphones. The system is designed to ensure rapid responses by coordinating with the appropriate security agencies.
“The app is linked to a central base in Abuja, which enables immediate identification of emergencies and facilitates rapid response coordination,” Odutola said.
“It enhances technical intelligence in crime resolution, allowing police to access areas that may be difficult to reach and ensuring effective sharing of information and threat detection."
The app, which is internet-enabled, allows users to send a 'rescue me' message in times of distress. This message activates the VGS central headquarters, which then mobilises a tactical team for a swift response.
The system aims to offer timely interventions in emergencies, from accidents to potential security threats, thereby improving safety for students and staff alike.
According to Odutola, the app can be used by schools across Ogun State, and potentially nationwide, wherever internet access is available.
“It is data-driven and allows schools to send distress messages to tactical team commanders when in danger. Within minutes, the VGS central headquarters will contact the relevant commanders to dispatch rescue teams,” she added.
VIGISCOPE is also designed to enhance technical intelligence, enabling law enforcement officers to access otherwise inaccessible areas without casualties. This includes supporting the interception of critical information and identifying potential threats before they escalate.

Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that between January and July 2024, Nigeria recorded 2,776 road traffic fatalities and 16,000 injuries, according to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume.
Subsequently, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) introduced a new mobile app and National Crash Reporting Information System (NACRIS) to improve road safety.
