The Nigeria Police Council has confirmed Tunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP).

Disu’s confirmation was ratified on Monday during a meeting of the Council held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, bringing an end to his brief tenure in an acting capacity.

The development follows his appointment as acting IGP by President Bola Tinubu on 24 February 2026, after the resignation of his predecessor, Kayode Egbetokun.

President Tinubu had formally decorated Disu with the rank of Inspector-General the following day, 25 February, signalling confidence in his leadership at a critical time for the nation’s security architecture.

Monday’s confirmation by the Police Council effectively cements Disu’s position as the head of the Nigeria Police Force, placing him in charge of overseeing law enforcement operations across the country.

The Nigeria Police Council, constitutionally empowered to advise the President on the appointment of the IGP and matters relating to the police, comprises key stakeholders including the President, state governors and senior officials. Its endorsement is a crucial procedural step in finalising the appointment of a substantive Inspector-General.

Disu assumes office amid ongoing concerns over security challenges in various parts of the country, including banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes. Observers note that his confirmation comes with high public expectations for reforms, improved intelligence gathering and enhanced community policing.

His immediate priorities are expected to include strengthening inter-agency collaboration, boosting officer morale and restoring public confidence in policing.

With his confirmation now secured, attention will likely shift to the strategic direction he outlines for the force and how swiftly his administration moves to address pressing security concerns nationwide.
