We have highlighted the five most important developments in the news today, Tuesday, April 15, and present them below.

5 issues in the news that should matter to you today

1. Tinubu condemns Plateau killings, orders swift action after 51 dead: President Bola Tinubu has condemned the latest wave of violence in Plateau State, where at least 51 people were killed in an early morning attack on Zikke and Kakpa communities in Bassa Local Government Area.

The attack, which also left scores injured, comes just two weeks after similar clashes in the region. Tinubu urged state authorities to take decisive steps toward a lasting resolution of the recurring communal conflicts that have plagued the area.

2. FG vows to curb N200bn solar panel imports, pushes for local production: The Federal Government is doubling down on its decision to halt the importation of photovoltaic solar panels, which it says has drained over N200 billion from the economy.

Speaking at a roundtable in Victoria Island, Lagos, on Monday, April 14, REA Managing Director Abba Aliyu emphasised the need to boost local production.

3. Edo govt, PDP clash over alleged Tinubu 2027 campaign support: The Edo State Government and the state Peoples Democratic Party on Monday, April 14, traded words over Governor Monday Okpebholo’s re-election campaign for President Bola Tinubu.

The Presidency had earlier disclaimed any such campaign materials and called for a stop to unauthorised political endorsements.

Reacting to this, PDP spokesperson Chris Nehikhare said the disclaimer dealt a major blow to Okpebholo’s supposed attempts to gain favour through “unlawful political grandstanding.”

4. Atiku’s 2027 bid will destroy PDP, Bode George warns: Veteran PDP leader and Board of Trustees member, Chief Bode George, has issued a warning against another presidential run by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Speaking on Channels TV’s Politics Today, George declared that the PDP would be doomed if Atiku secured the party’s 2027 ticket, insisting that the opposition party needs a fresh direction to stay viable.

5. JAMB Registrar applauds Tinubu for approving 67 new tertiary institutions: President Bola Tinubu has received praise from JAMB Registrar Prof. Is-haq Oloyede for his recent approval of 67 new tertiary institutions across Nigeria.

The expansion includes 22 new universities, 33 polytechnics and mono-technics, and 12 colleges of education, all sanctioned between late 2024 and early 2025.

Oloyede made the remarks during an interactive session with senior officials from the newly established and upgraded institutions in Abuja, hailing the move as a significant step toward improving access to higher education nationwide.
