The Edo State Government has concluded plans to train 800 youths in advanced digital skills as part of efforts to equip young people for future employment challenges and position them for opportunities in the global technology space.

The state Commissioner for Education, Dr Paddy Iyamu, disclosed this on Wednesday in Benin City at the flag-off of a six-month Advanced Job Ready Tech Skills Training programme. The Edo State Government is implementing the initiative in partnership with Google and DeepTech Ready.

Speaking at the event, Iyamu urged participating students to maximise the opportunity, noting that the programme was designed to enhance their technical competence and global competitiveness. According to him, the state government is committed to ensuring that Edo youths are adequately prepared for the rapidly evolving digital economy.

“We are going to be certifying about 800 of our students in tech skills so that we can give them opportunities in the international space,” the commissioner said. He added that the government would intensify efforts to provide structured learning environments through computer-based test centres, enabling students to acquire relevant skills and compete favourably worldwide.

Iyamu explained that the initiative aligns with the administration’s broader vision of youth empowerment and innovation-driven development. He reaffirmed the government’s readiness to support young people who demonstrate determination and a strong desire to succeed.

As part of the digital skills drive, the commissioner revealed that Governor Godwin Obaseki had approved the revamp of the state’s technology hub. He also disclosed that at least 25 computer-based test centres would be established across the state to support training, assessments, and certification.

The event also provided a platform to showcase student innovation. A 400-level Mechatronics Engineering student of the University of Benin, Miss Elizabeth Chiketarauba, exhibited a modern solar-powered tricycle she invented. Chiketarauba explained that her experience being stuck in traffic inspired the innovation, which she said could charge mobile phones, power household appliances and be used by small business operators such as barbers.

Impressed by the invention, Iyamu announced a financial support of one million naira from the Edo State Government to develop the project further. He encouraged students to think creatively, embrace innovation and apply their skills to solving real-life problems, describing innovation as a key driver of sustainable development in the state.
