A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Emmanuel Ogidi, has called for a thorough investigation into the recent attack on members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Edo State.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday, Ogidi described the reported hostilities involving prominent political figures as a “bad omen” for Nigeria’s democracy, particularly as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.
He said it was deeply troubling that the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, alongside former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), John Odigie-Oyegun, and other ADC leaders, were allegedly subjected to such an attack.
Ogidi urged Bola Tinubu to direct security agencies to immediately investigate the reported threats to the lives of ADC members and ensure that anyone found culpable is prosecuted in accordance with the law.
According to him, decisive measures must be taken to prevent a recurrence and safeguard Nigeria’s political environment from avoidable violence.
“It is unfortunate that we have reduced political contests to this level. First, it was attacks by bandits and herdsmen; now, politicians are going after one another,” Ogidi said.
He also referenced disruptions during the recent Area Council elections in Abuja, alleging that sponsored political thugs interfered with the electoral process in Abaji Area Council.
“I call on Mr President to investigate these incidents. The matter must be investigated and the culprits brought to book,” he added.
The PDP chieftain emphasised the need for political tolerance among stakeholders, warning that the prevailing climate could discourage citizens from participating in future elections.
“What is happening now will make many people afraid of coming out for future elections. We must not allow this to happen,” he said.
Ogidi further advised Nigerians not to succumb to fear or intimidation, stressing that the country belongs to all its citizens and that democratic participation must be protected at all costs.
