  • The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has rescheduled the local government elections in Oyo State to Tuesday, December 29, 2026
  • The election will be conducted across the 33 local government areas of the state between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm
  • The commission said the new date is intended to ensure efficient security deployment, improved logistics, and better voter participation

The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has shifted the date for the state’s local government elections to Tuesday, December 29, 2026.

The election will take place across the 33 local government areas of the state.

The Chairman of the commission, Babatunde Adeniyi, announced the development in a statement issued in Ibadan, the state capital, on Tuesday, March 10.

According to the statement dated March 4, 2026, the adjustment followed a recent change in the national electoral timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

INEC had moved the Presidential and National Assembly elections from February 20, 2027, to January 16, 2027, a date that OYSIEC had earlier fixed for the conduct of the local government election in the state.

Explaining the reason for the shift, the chairman said the change was necessary to avoid clashes between the two electoral exercises.

He said, “The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission hereby informs political parties, security agencies, stakeholders and the general public that the local government election earlier scheduled for Saturday, January 16, 2027, has been rescheduled to Tuesday, December 29, 2026, between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm.

“This decision became necessary following the recent revision of the national electoral timetable by the Independent Electoral Commission, which moved the Presidential and National Assembly elections from February 20, 2027, to January 16, 2027, a date previously scheduled by OYSIEC for the conduct of local government elections in Oyo State, thereby creating an operational and logistical overlap.

“After due consultation, the commission resolved to reschedule the election to Tuesday, 29 December 2026, to prevent operational congestion, ensure optimal security deployment, protect voter participation, maintain administrative clarity, and safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.”

Adeniyi also disclosed that political parties will be required to conclude their electioneering campaigns before midnight on Monday, December 28, 2026.

He added that any rerun election, if necessary, would be conducted on Tuesday, January 5, 2027.

The OYSIEC chairman further urged political parties and other stakeholders to continue their preparations in line with the revised timetable.

He reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to organising a peaceful, transparent, credible and inclusive local government election across the state.
