- Son has been Tottenham’s standout performer since 2015, earning three Player of the Season awards and scoring 125 Premier League goals
- The South Korean star has scored 169 goals in 431 appearances for the club, winning the Premier League Golden Boot in 2021/22
Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur have officially extended Son Heung-min’s contract by one year, securing the South Korean international until the summer of 2026.
The club announced the deal as a significant boost amidst ongoing challenges in their campaign for a Premier League trophy.
Son, who joined Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, has been a consistent performer for nearly a decade. With 431 appearances and 169 goals across all competitions, he has firmly established himself as one of the Premier League’s most prolific forwards.
The 32-year-old’s previous contract was set to expire in June 2025, sparking speculation over his future as top European clubs reportedly monitored his availability. However, Tottenham acted swiftly to trigger the extension clause, ending any immediate doubts about his departure.
In November, Son hinted that this season might be his last at the North London club, revealing that contract talks had yet to take place. At the time, he expressed full focus on winning silverware rather than discussing his future.
“We haven’t talked about anything yet, I’m focused on this season, and at my age, every second counts. I just want to help the team win something this year,” Son said during an interview.
Despite injuries and inconsistent performances from the squad this season, Son has remained a vital figure, registering seven goals and six assists. His leadership as club captain has also helped stabilise the dressing room under manager Ange Postecoglou.
Tottenham’s official statement praised Son’s contributions, describing him as a “modern-day great” and a “global star.” The club also highlighted his Premier League achievements, including 125 goals that place him among the league’s top 20 all-time scorers.
Son’s standout performances over the years include sharing the 2021/22 Premier League Golden Boot with Mohamed Salah. He has also been named Tottenham’s Player of the Season three times, making him one of the club’s most influential players.
Off the club pitch, Son’s international record is equally impressive. He has earned 131 caps and scored 51 goals for South Korea, representing his nation in three consecutive World Cups (2014, 2018, and 2022).
Manager Ange Postecoglou will undoubtedly welcome Son’s commitment as he aims to rebuild and strengthen the squad.
