Political activist Aisha Yesufu has declared that she would strongly oppose former presidential candidate Peter Obi if he becomes president and chooses to serve more than one term in office.

Yesufu made the remarks on Monday during an appearance on Prime Time, a programme on Arise Television, where she stressed the importance of political integrity and keeping campaign promises.

According to her, Obi had repeatedly pledged, even before the 2023 general election, that he would serve only one term if elected president. She said this commitment formed part of the basis on which she publicly supported and advocated for him.

“If Peter Obi gets into office as president and decides to do more than one term, I will oppose him with everything in me because he gave his word, and he has to stick to his words,” she said.

Yesufu revealed that she personally sought clarification from Obi on the matter to ensure she was not misrepresenting him while campaigning on his behalf.

“I sat down with Mr Peter Obi and I said to him, I need your word on this. I know you had said it before. I want you to repeat it. Is it true you’re going to do just one term?” she recounted.

According to her, Obi reaffirmed his position during that conversation, insisting that his one-term pledge remained unchanged from his earlier public statements.

She emphasised that her advocacy was built on trust and credibility, noting that she does not take such commitments lightly.

“I was going out telling people and putting my name on the line. I don’t joke with my name. I don’t joke with my integrity,” she said.

Yesufu added that any attempt by Obi to reverse his stance would be met with firm resistance from her and like-minded supporters, although she expressed confidence in his character.

“So, he can’t come back and say that he’s going to do more than one term. We will fight him there. But I know also that he’s someone who keeps his words,” she stated.

Her comments have reignited discussions around political promises, accountability, and the expectations placed on leaders by their supporters in Nigeria’s evolving democratic space.

Peter Obi expresses uncertainty over ADC presidential ticket ahead of 2027 elections

Meanwhile, TheRadar previously reported that Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has voiced doubts over his ability to secure the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a video message shared with his supporters, Obi acknowledged that obtaining the party’s nomination is not guaranteed. “Someone asked me how I know for sure that the ADC will give me the presidential ticket. I cannot be certain. What matters is that we are committed to a cause,” he said.
