As part of our ongoing ‘Know Your Lawmakers’ series, we focus this edition on the senators representing Enugu State in the National Assembly from 2023 to 2027.

Enugu, located in the south-central region of Nigeria, was created in 1991 and shares borders with Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, Benue, Kogi, and Anambra states.

The state’s capital, also named Enugu, is historically known for its coal mining industry. The name was derived from the Igbo phrase Enu Ugwu, which translates to “top of the hill.”

Enugu has three senatorial districts: Enugu North, Enugu West, and Enugu East. Each district is represented by one senator, whose responsibilities include advocating for local issues, shaping national policies, and contributing to the economic and social development of the state.

TheRadar compiled the three senators representing the state’s senatorial districts below:

1. Okechukwu Ezea (Enugu North)

Senator Okechukwu Ezea currently represents Enugu North Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate. A graduate of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Ezea earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science before furthering his education at the University of Lagos, where he obtained both bachelor's and master's degrees in Law.

His political journey began in his university days, where he took on leadership roles in student politics. He later ventured into national politics, contesting gubernatorial elections in Enugu State under various political parties.

In 2022, Ezea joined the Labour Party and secured the party's ticket for the Senate. He was elected in 2023 to represent Enugu North in the Senate.

As part of his legislative contributions,  he introduced a bill titled “The Agricultural Research Council Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024”, aimed at amending the existing Act to facilitate the establishment of a Federal College of Agriculture in Adani, Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area, Enugu State.

2. Osita Ngwu (Enugu West)

Osita Ngwu, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is the current senator for Enugu West Senatorial District, having been elected to office in 2023.

He holds a Bachelor of Engineering from Enugu State University of Science and Technology (2001) and a Master of Science from the University of Roehampton Business School, which he earned in 2016.

As part of his legislative efforts, Senator Osita Ngwu introduced a motion to stop the privatisation of mining assets, citing concerns over the sector’s minimal contribution to Nigeria’s GDP despite its rich natural resources.

He emphasised that the sector remained underperforming in terms of job creation, infrastructure development, and economic growth, ranking among the lowest in sub-Saharan Africa.

Additionally, Senator Ngwu sponsored a bill to create the Health Infrastructure Development Agency to enhance healthcare access and quality across the country.

3. Kelvin Chukwu (Enugu East)

Kelvin Chukwu, a member of the Labour Party, is the current senator representing Enugu East in the 10th National Assembly.

Following his secondary school education, he pursued an HND in Mass Communications at the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) Enugu. He also holds a law degree from Ebonyi State University in Abakaliki.

His political journey began after the heartbreaking assassination of his brother, Oyibo Chukwu, just three days before the presidential and National Assembly elections on February 25, 2023.

His legislative actions include advocating for the rights of pensioners, addressing security issues, and supporting regional development by co-sponsoring motions and bills.
