As part of our ongoing ‘Know Your Lawmakers,’ series, we focus this edition on the senators representing Anambra State in the National Assembly for the period between 2023 and 2027.
Anambra State, often referred to as the "Light of the Nation," boasts a rich cultural heritage rooted in the Igbo civilization. Established on August 27, 1991, from parts of the former Anambra and Enugu states, Anambra’s history is closely linked to that of the entire Igbo people.
The state’s name was derived from the Anambra River, a colonial adaptation of the Omambala River, which flows into the majestic River Niger.
Since Nigeria's return to democracy in 1999, Anambra has been represented by three senators, one from each of its senatorial districts: Anambra North, Anambra South, and Anambra Central.
These senators play crucial roles in advocating for their constituents, addressing local concerns at the national level, and shaping policies that promote economic growth and social development.
TheRadar compiled the three senators representing the state’s senatorial districts below:
1. Chukwunonyelu Victor Umeh (Anambra Central)
Senator Victor Umeh represents the Anambra Central Senatorial District in Nigeria’s 10th Senate. Born on July 19, 1962, in Aguluzigbo, Anambra State, he earned a BSc in Estate Management from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
Umeh's political journey began in 1998 with the Peoples Democratic Party, and he co-founded the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in 2002. He later served as the party's National Chairman, guiding APGA to notable electoral successes in Anambra and beyond.
His dedication to democracy and governance has earned him several accolades, including the Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) and the Papal Knighthood of St. Sylvester (KSS).
Through his Victor Umeh Education Foundation (VUMEF), he provides support to underprivileged students, offering scholarships to over 220 individuals.
Recently, Umeh has taken a firm stance on reforming Nigeria’s petroleum sector, calling for the dismissal of its management due to soaring fuel prices. This reflects his commitment to addressing pressing issues and listening to the concerns of his constituents.
2. Tony Nwoye Okechikwu (Anambra North)
Tony Nwoye currently serves as the Senator for Anambra North, having taken office in June 2023 after succeeding Stella Oduah. He was born on September 13, 1974, in Onitsha, Anambra State, where he completed his secondary education at Metropolitan Secondary School.
Nwoye’s political journey began in the Nigerian House of Representatives, where he represented the Anambra East/West constituency. Over the years, he has been associated with various political parties, including the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the All Progressives Congress (APC), and now the Labour Party (LP).
He rose through the political ranks, becoming the Assistant Secretary of the Anambra State PDP Executive Committee in 2005, and later took on the role of Chairman of the State Executive Committee, becoming the youngest individual to lead a major political party in Nigeria at just 31 years old.
Senator Nwoye has initiated and completed some infrastructure projects to benefit his constituents.
His efforts include the construction of 23 lock-up shops equipped with a solar-powered borehole, overhead tanks, and toilets for petty traders at the Slaughter Market opposite Army Gate in Onitsha North Local Government.
He has also facilitated the establishment of a community hall and computer training building for the residents of Okotie Iyiowa Odekpe in Ogbaru Local Government, aimed at enhancing local education and development.
3. Ifeanyi Ubah (Anambra South)
Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who represented the Anambra South Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate, reportedly passed away from cardiac arrest in London on July 27. Born on September 3, 1971, in Abuja, Nigeria, Ubah was a notable figure in both politics and business.
He took office as a senator on February 24, 2019, succeeding Andy Uba. Ubah was a successful entrepreneur, founding Capital Oil in 2001, which became well-known for its extensive network of facilities and outlets, particularly in Nigeria’s Southeast and Southwest regions.
In addition to his business achievements, Ubah was an active participant in Nigerian politics. He had ambitions to run for governor of Anambra State in the 2025 elections under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
His political journey included a run for the governorship in 2014 with the Labour Party and his election to the Senate in 2019 with the Young Progressive Party (YPP) before later joining the APC.
Ubah was also dedicated to philanthropy through the Ifeanyi Ubah Foundation, contributing to various community development initiatives.
