The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has affirmed that candidates sitting for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) can write the exam in any location across Nigeria, regardless of where they registered.

This clarification follows a misleading report suggesting that candidates must take the UTME in the same state where they completed their registration.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, April 16, by JAMB’s Public Communication Advisor, Fabian Benjamin, the exam body refuted the claim, describing it as false and misleading.

“In a recent interview with a NAN reporter, I clearly stated that candidates are not restricted to taking the examination in the state where they registered. They can register anywhere and select any town nationwide from any registration point,” Benjamin explained.

He noted that JAMB's Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres are organised by towns to ease access and logistics.

Candidates are expected to choose a preferred town during registration and will be posted to a CBT centre within that town, not necessarily within their registration state.

“For example, if a candidate chooses Garki as their exam town, they will take the exam in Garki. The claim that such candidates can be posted to a different town is unfounded,” he added.

He emphasised that candidates have complete freedom to register in one state and sit for the exam in another, depending on what’s convenient for them.

“A candidate may register in Lagos and still choose to take the UTME in Sokoto, or any other part of the country. This flexibility was designed to meet candidates’ varying needs,” he stated.

JAMB urged the public and all UTME candidates to disregard the inaccurate report, stressing that no such restriction exists.

2025 UTME: JAMB announces registration, examination dates

Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) released key dates for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

JAMB's Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, revealed that the sale of UTME forms would commence on January 31, 2025, and end on March 5, 2025.
