  • Governor Siminalayi Fubara accused Rivers lawmakers of blocking his presentation of the 2025 Appropriation Bill, despite notifying the House leadership
  • Fubara inaugurated the Bori Zonal Hospital in Khana, a 105-bed facility, as part of his 'Rivers First' agenda to improve public healthcare in the state
  • Despite the political setback, Fubara reaffirmed his commitment to transparency and the protection of civil servants’ well-being, while avoiding retaliation

Rivers State governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has accused the state’s lawmakers of denying him access to present the 2025 Appropriation Bill at the Assembly, despite notifying the House leadership of his intention to do so.

Fubara made the allegation during the inauguration of the Bori Zonal Hospital in Khana Local Government Area on Wednesday, March 12.

He explained that he had made numerous attempts, including sending WhatsApp messages to the Speaker and other Assembly members, to ensure the timely presentation of the budget. However, upon arriving at the Assembly, he was denied entry and was told that no communication had been made about his visit.

The governor expressed disappointment, stating, "I made frantic efforts to reach the Speaker… but unfortunately, when we got there this morning, we were denied access."

Fubara reiterated his commitment to transparency and due process, asserting that his actions were in line with the Supreme Court ruling, which emphasises the protection of the state's economy and the well-being of civil servants.

He went on to clarify the situation, stating, “I am aware of reports claiming there was no communication on my part. I want to set the record straight and confirm that I followed due process in this matter.”

Despite the setback, Fubara chose not to retaliate, emphasising the temporary nature of power.

"Nothing lasts forever, What matters is how we use power. I have chosen not to abuse mine." he said

In contrast to the political impasse, Fubara used the occasion to highlight his administration's efforts in improving public healthcare.

The newly inaugurated Bori Zonal Hospital, part of his 'Rivers First' agenda, is a significant milestone in healthcare delivery, designed to alleviate pressure on tertiary hospitals.

The 105-bed hospital, which had been started during former Governor Chibuike Amaechi’s tenure but left incomplete, has now been expanded and modernised to meet current healthcare needs.

Dr. Adaeze Oreh, the Commissioner for Health, stated that the hospital would provide world-class medical services and ease the burden on teaching hospitals in the region.

Fubara directed that the facility be immediately opened to the public, underscoring the importance of accessible healthcare.

The Bori Zonal Hospital is equipped to handle a variety of medical services, including surgical cases, high-risk pregnancies, trauma, and mental health care.

Local leaders, including the Head of Local Government Administration for Khana LGA, Helen Chiorlu, commended the governor for his commitment to enhancing healthcare in the region.
