The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, is scheduled to deliver the University of Port Harcourt convocation lecture on Saturday at the institution’s New Convocation Arena in Choba, Rivers State.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Senior Special Assistant to the Minister on Public Communications and Social Media, Wike will speak on the theme: “Leadership and Infrastructure Development in Nigeria: Lessons for Future Leaders.” The event is billed to commence at 10:00 a.m.
The lecture forms part of activities marking the 36th convocation ceremony of the University of Port Harcourt, University of Port Harcourt.
In a letter dated April 20, 2026, and signed by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Owunari A. Georgewill, the university formally invited the Minister to serve as convocation lecturer, describing him as a leader with “exemplary contributions to governance, infrastructural development and public administration.”
The university stated that the convocation lecture serves as a key platform for engaging graduating students and members of the academic community on issues relating to national development, leadership, and societal progress.
“The Convocation Lecture, a central highlight of the ceremony, provides a platform for distinguished personalities of national and global repute to engage our graduating students and the wider academic community on issues of critical importance,” the letter stated.
The Vice Chancellor added that Wike’s presence would “honour the alma mater and strengthen the link between leadership, scholarship, and national development,” while also serving as motivation for graduating students at a critical stage in their lives.
In his response, conveyed through a letter dated April 23, 2026, and signed by his Chief of Staff, Chidi Amadi, the Minister accepted the invitation and expressed readiness to deliver the lecture.
The Minister’s office noted that the chosen topic reflects his belief that effective leadership must translate into tangible outcomes, particularly in the provision of infrastructure, social services, and amenities that improve citizens’ quality of life.
Wike’s lecture is expected to attract academics, students, policymakers, and stakeholders in the education and governance sectors, as the institution marks its latest convocation ceremony.
