  • Emir Aminu Bayero has formally notified police and DSS about plans for the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir Durbar in Kano
  • The Sallah festivities are scheduled to begin on May 27, 2026, from the Nasarawa Palace
  • The emirate described the Durbar as an important annual cultural tradition in Kano

The 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Bayero, has officially informed security agencies of plans to hold the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir Durbar celebrations from the Nasarawa Palace in Kano.

In separate letters sent to the Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, and the State Director of the Department of State Services, the emirate disclosed that preparations for the annual Sallah festivities would commence on May 27, 2026.

The letters, dated May 17, 2026, were signed by the Emir’s private secretary, Abdullahi Kwaru, and copies were made available to the press on Friday, May 22.

According to the correspondence, the decision to organise the Durbar followed deliberations by members of the Kano Emirate Council.

“The outcome of the meetings of Kano Emirate Council members indicated the observance of Durbar festivities as provided in the attached programme,” the letter stated.

The emirate further described the Durbar as a longstanding cultural tradition that allows the emir to ride through the city alongside district heads and council members on horseback to greet residents and receive homage from subjects.

“Durbar festivities are annual events that enable His Highness to go round the city with his council members on horseback with royal paraphernalia to see his people and his subjects also to greet him,” the letter added.

The announcement comes amid continued public attention surrounding the Kano emirship tussle.

Bayero’s position remains the subject of legal disputes after he was dethroned by the Kano State Government, while Muhammadu Sanusi II was reinstated as the 16th Emir of Kano.

Despite the tension surrounding the royal leadership dispute, the emirate assured security agencies that the three-day Sallah Durbar would be peaceful and orderly.

“While anticipating your usual cooperation and support, please accept the assurance of His Highness’ esteemed regards,” the letter stated.

The Kano Durbar is widely regarded as one of Northern Nigeria’s most celebrated cultural festivals, attracting significant public interest during the Eid-el-Kabir season.
