President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's congratulatory message to Ghana’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, has stirred a wave of reactions among Nigerian netizens. 

During a telephone call on Sunday, December 8, Tinubu emphasised the importance of the people's right to freely choose their leaders. He praised the people of Ghana for choosing democracy as the path to political stability, economic growth, and good governance. 

Tinubu congratulates Ghana’s president-elect Mahama

Tinubu’s congratulatory message was contained in a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s spokesman. 

The statement read, “President Tinubu renews his steadfast support for deepening the fraternal bonds between Nigeria and Ghana underpinned by shared history, cultural ties, mutual support and cooperation, Pan-African goals, democracy, the rule of law and economic integration.

“The Nigerian leader thanks President Nana Akufo-Addo for his exemplary leadership and numerous contributions to Ghana’s progress and regional peace and stability.

“The President looks forward to working with President Mahama’s incoming administration to strengthen bilateral ties across various sectors and build a brighter future in the West Africa region.”

Nigerians react to Tinubu’s statement

Tinubu's comment emphasising the people's right to freely choose their leaders has, however, sparked reactions online, with many Nigerians drawing comparisons to their own electoral process. 

A user on X (formerly Twitter) remarked, “We hope they will allow Nigerians to vote for their elected leaders without any interference. Only God knows what is going through the mind of Mahama.”

“Yet Tinubu didn’t allow Nigerians choose their leaders. Tinibu didn’t allow Edo people choose their governor. Tinubu didn’t allow Ondo people to choose their leader. We are watching,” Dee reacted. 

“Una dey whine abi🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. People must freely choose their leaders outside Nigeria. When e reach our turn to choose our own leaders, na there all the endless stories go enter😎😎😎. No wahala Sir Tinubu,” Engr C.Peter stated.

“The president said to Nigerians to grab it and run with it. Then, the president said to Ghanaians to freely elect their leaders. Mocking Nigerians, obviously,” Rule of Law Nigeria added. 

“But Nigerians didn't choose you,I guess na you choose us,” Jhon $now stated. 

“Says a man who forced himself on 🇳🇬Nigeria using the afebabslolasm treatment,” Good health 247 reacted. 

“IREV was not switched off. They did not snatch the ballot box. Agbéró did not send threats to other tribes,” Kabeer_Kabeer8 added.

“During his own selection process,he told his supporters,to go for it, fight for it, grab it and run with it. Today he is telling the president elect of Ghana,that people must freely choose their leaders,” Correct Guy added.
