- APGA commends passage of Electoral Act 2026
- Praises President Tinubu for prompt assent
- Ratifies 2026 primaries guidelines and timetable
The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has praised the prompt passage of the Electoral Act 2026 and commended President Bola Tinubu for granting immediate assent to the bill. The party said the enactment would enhance certainty in the electoral process and strengthen the preparations of the Independent National Electoral Commission for the 2027 general elections.
The commendation was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of APGA’s National Working Committee (NWC) meeting held at the South-East Regional Secretariat in Awka on Friday. The NWC highlighted innovative provisions in the new Electoral Act, particularly regarding political party primaries and the digitisation of membership databases, noting that these measures align with global best practices and support internal party democracy.
The party expressed concern over persistent insecurity in various parts of the country, which has caused loss of lives and property, urging President Tinubu to intensify efforts to curb the threat nationwide. “The APGA NWC commends the leadership of the National Assembly for the prompt passage of the Electoral Act, 2026,” the communiqué read.
APGA also encouraged its members and prospective members to participate in the ongoing Electronic Membership Revalidation and Registration Exercise, describing it as a window of opportunity to strengthen the party’s grassroots base.
The NWC congratulated the Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, on his swearing-in for a second term, praising his developmental initiatives, which contributed to APGA’s electoral success in the state. The party urged Soludo to continue implementing his campaign promises to make Anambra a livable and prosperous smart megacity.
In response to recent disturbances in the FCT Chapter, the NWC approved the immediate dissolution of the State Working Committee, local government executives, and ward committees. A Caretaker Committee will be constituted and notified to INEC in accordance with the party constitution.
The party also approved the convening of Stakeholders’ Summits and Conferences across the six geopolitical zones as part of preparations for the 2027 elections. The NWC ratified the 2026 APGA electoral guidelines and timetable for primaries.
Finally, the NWC commended the combined efforts of the Nigeria Police Force, the Armed Forces, and Senate leadership under Godswill Akpabio in addressing insecurity and defending democracy, including upholding constitutional order concerning Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe’s alleged unlawful defection from APGA.
