The Kano House of Assembly introduces a bill on Monday, July 15, to create second-class emirates in Kano State. The bill passes its second and third readings on Tuesday, July 16.

Second-class emirates will fall under Sanusi

The proposed legislation intends to form three emirates: Rano (Rano, Bunkure, Kibiya), Karaye (Karaye, Rogo), and Gaya (Gaya, Ajingi, Albasu), which will fall under the jurisdiction of Muhammadu Sanusi II, Emir of Kano.

This development follows a ruling from a Kano state high court, which permanently barred Aminu Bayero from parading himself as the Emir of Kano until a suit was resolved.

Court upholds dethronement of Bayero, 4 other emirs

The presiding judge, Aminu Aliyu, also barred four other dethroned emirs of Bichi, Gaya, Rano, and Karaye from presenting themselves as emirs, in favour of Sanusi.

The Court then ordered Aminu Ado-Bayero and the four other former Emirs to quickly return all Emirate Traditional Royal Artefacts to the government and the substantive Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

Tensions in Kano have intensified due to the emirship conflict, with reactions following the hearing of the second-class emirates.
