- Afrobeats singer Rema shared the inspiration behind the production of HEIS album
- This is not the first time the singer has expressed his thoughts on this
- Rema noted that HEIS production was a risk, but he was glad for those who trusted his ideas
Popular Afrobeats singer Divine Ikubor, better known as Rema, has revealed the risk he took to experiment new sounds on his recently released HEIS album.
HEIS was released on Thursday, July 11 and received mixed feelings from fans and critics particularly because of its different production experiments.
In a TikTok interview video posted by Complex Music, on August 9, Rema responding to the interviewer, agreed that his production on HEIS might be similar to Yeezus, the sixth studio album of popular American rapper, Kanye West.
“I mean it's fair, you know because I experimented a lot. I did a lot of infusion but still kept it raw, original and local. I feel like it is definitely going to be a fan favourite.” he said.
When asked about the inspiration behind his production on the HEIS album, the singer elaborated on his reasons for adopting a fresh approach.
“It's quite sensitive. It is a sensitive spot in the sense that I'm in a stage where I'm already quite global and it's just left for me to continue, right? For someone like that, to be like no, I want to take it back to square one. It's quite risky because if the experiments don't work out great, it's like you're back to square one or you're making something horrible.”
“It was touchy for a lot of people like even the label and all of that but it's like I'm glad they trust my ideas. I'm glad my OGs respect my views. I feel like this is beyond me because, in every move I make, I always have the culture on my back because I am representing a generation that needs to leave a mark in Afrobeats.” Rema added.
This is not the first time, Rema shared the inspiration behind HEIS music production. In July, in a recent interview with Apple Music, he had shared that “Afrobeats was getting boring so I had to switch it up. They keep applauding and we will be watering it down until some people start winning our Afrobeats awards.”
Tracing Rema’s growth in the industry from a teenager to a 24-year-old, there is a significant evolution in his styles, branding, and music.
Album Review: “HEIS” is Rema’s monotonous outburst for recognition
Earlier, TheRadar reviewed Rema’s album. It solidified an evolution in the 24-year-old's artistic journey, but it signalled a monotonous outburst to seek recognition.
Considering the title of the album and its meaning, Rema, born Divine Ikubor, made a rather bold declaration of himself as “number one” in the music game - which is quite controversial.
