Nigeria faces economic challenges and security issues that impact many of its citizens. As a result, it is common for people to seek better opportunities abroad.

This phenomenon, often referred to as the "japa syndrome,” has resulted in the separation of families and the relocation of individuals to foreign countries.

The Nigerian entertainment industry has not been immune to this trend. Nigerian celebrities are no exception, ditching the hustle and bustle of Nigeria for the bright lights and promise of foreign lands.

Who are the celebrities who have joined the ‘Japa Syndrome’ trend? Let's take a look!

With their love, laughter, and unwavering support for one another, this Nigerian celebrity power couple has been a source of joy for many.

Despite facing controversies over infidelity and a four-time battle with cancer, Bankole Wellington, popularly known as Banky W, and Adesua Etomi-Wellington have moved beyond these challenges.

In July, Banky-W surprised his fans by posting an unexpected announcement on his Instagram account, @bankywellington. He revealed that the entire Wellington family would be moving to the United States for academic pursuits.

He posted: “Gave up being a CEO to become a student... because sometimes, you have to let go of what's impressive to gain what's important. Currently pursuing a Master's in Policy at Georgetown University in Washington DC. The journey of faith continues. Please wish me well!”

Following this, the couple welcomed another baby into the family.

2. Tacha

In November 2024, former BBNaija housemate Tacha took to her X handle, @Simply_Tacha, to announce her plans to relocate abroad. The news sparked controversy, with some critics doubting her ability to adapt to life in the United Kingdom.

However, Tacha silenced her critics by posting a picture of herself in London, confirming her relocation.

The reality TV star further posted on her Instagram page, @symply_tacha, the similarities between London and Lagos traffic. She added that the only difference is that London drivers maintain their lane, contrary to Lagos drivers.

She shared: “I want to tell my people that there is traffic in London on a Monday morning. When they tell you London is the second Lagos, you won't agree. The L in London is the same as the L in Lagos. Because, tell me why there is traffic so early in the morning.

3. Dele Omo Woli

Olamide Oladimeji Mayungbe, aka Dele Omo Woli, is one of Nigeria's talented skit makers.

Dele Omo Woli's rise to fame is a true rags-to-riches story. He began his career as a humble drummer for the group "Alfa Sule." However, his big break came when he teamed up with the hilarious Ayobami Ajewole, aka Woli Agba. The rest, as they say, is history.

He is one of the celebrities who recently relocated abroad. He posted on his Instagram page @deleomowoli_mideoladimeji how his faith and belief in God and his participation in the Hallelujah Challenge, February edition, made it possible for him to earn his visa into Canada.

He posted: “ Faith is not the belief that God will do what you want. It is the belief that God will do what is right." "Without faith, nothing is possible. GOD DID #gratefulheart”

Dele Omo Woli is currently in Nigeria, gearing up for his highly anticipated concert, Rave Music 3rd Edition, which is scheduled for December 6th.

Abimbola Kazeem, famously known as Jigan Babaoja, the talented actor behind the iconic slogan "So mo age mi," has just joined the list of Nigerian celebrities who have relocated abroad this year.

Despite facing physical challenges, Jigan Babaoja has consistently pushed boundaries and achieved remarkable success in the entertainment industry, inspiring countless fans with his determination and creativity.

The Nollywood actor still remains agile in the Nollywood industry despite not being in Nigeria anymore.

While some Nigerian celebrities, like Wizkid, Adekunle Gold, Femi Adeolu, Princess Chineke, and Helen Paul, have made the permanent move, others, such as Davido, Sharon Ooja, and others, split their time between Nigeria and their adopted homes abroad. As the Nigerian entertainment industry continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how this trend shapes the careers of its stars.
