  • Netizens reacted to the gesture, sharing mixed feelings

The Governor of Edo State, Obaseki, has named Edo Arena, a stadium in the state, after Afrobeats singer Divine Ikubor, known as Rema.

The 6000-capacity arena will be called "Rema Dome" after the Afrobeats star for his musical contributions and feats as an indigene of the state.

The arena is said to be located at the former Garrick Memorial School Ground, Ekehaun Road, Benin City

In an X (formerly Twitter) post on his official handle on August 29, the governor shared the news while congratulating Rema at the groundbreaking ceremony.

It was a pleasure to have our global music icon, @heisrema, join me in performing the groundbreaking ceremony for the 6000-capacity Edo Arena. The arena, which will be called ‘Rema Dome,’ is located at the former Garrick Memorial School. ground on Ekehuan Road in the state capital.” he wrote.

The site, according to him, spans about 5 hectares of land, and is envisioned as an entertainment hub that will host a wide range of events.

It will accommodate events like concerts and national conferences to symposiums and other large gatherings.

The arena will attract more visitors to the state, allowing them to experience our rich culture and what we have to offer, which will create employment opportunities for our youths.Special thanks to our Afrobeats superstar for being a part of this event. With someone of the calibre and fame of @heisrema associated with the arena, it automatically becomes a global project.” The Governor added.

Governor Obaseki further revealed that the idea was born out of the need for an arena that could accommodate people at events.

Meanwhile, Rema is currently in Benin City for his homecoming concert at the Ogbe Stadium in the state.

Album Review: “HEIS” is Rema’s monotonous outburst for recognition

Earlier, TheRadar reviewed Rema’s album, which continued the evolution of the 24-year-old's music journey, while signalling a monotonous outburst to seek recognition.

Considering the title of the album and its meaning, Rema, born Divine Ikubor, made a rather bold declaration of himself as “number one” in the music game - which is quite controversial.
