Basketmouth takes swipe at Wizkid’s stage name during AY Live, praises Davido

Popular comedian Basketmouth stirred online buzz after taking a subtle dig at Afrobeats star Wizkid during the 2025 AY Live show. 

While discussing top Nigerian music acts, he commended Davido for using his real name and poked fun at Wizkid and Burna Boy. 

According to Basketmouth, Davido did a good thing by using his real name, while Wizkid added "kid" to his stage name without realising that he would eventually grow older. 

He joked in Pidgin English,

“Let's talk about these guys, Davido, Wizkid and Burna Boy. Let's break it down, David has been consistent. He even used his real name, Davido. Consistent for years. David has been going on stage with 100 people. Till today him still maintain that number.”

The comedian then took a swipe at Wizkid,

"Wizkid, wizkid give himself wizkid him forget say him go grow old. Now he is struggling to change the name, nobody gree – machala, na lie you are a Wizkid. Big Bird – na lie, you’re a kid. Wizkid no be as e dey be for. Be for him dey whine waist, dey go choreography on top stage. But now him go just wear singlet dey sing ‘She tell me say..”

The viral clip of the performance has since sparked intense debate on social media. The video showed Davido laughing at a comment by Basketmouth, which drew criticism from Wizkid's fans, known as Wizkid FC. 

Many fans warned that Wizkid's comeback would be brutal. However, some observers have interpreted the scene as lighthearted and humorous, suggesting that Basketmouth's comments were not meant to be malicious but mere comedy.

Basketmouth’s subtle support of polygamy with biblical references causes controversy online

Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that a post by renowned comedian Basketmouth suggested that polygamy is more advantageous than monogamy. 

He cited Biblical characters who practised polygamy and monogamy, asking people to draw an inference, which has caused a stir on social media.
