- Asake just dropped a new single titled Wave
- He featured UK rapper Central Cee on it
- The video of the song has got netizens talking
Airwaves and music spaces are buzzing with the release of Wave, the latest single by popular Afrobeats singer Asake, with assistance from UK rap lord Central Cee.
The new single was released on Thursday, June 20, on all streaming platforms, and it blends the pop, rhythymic elements of Afrobeats with punchy rap to make it an exciting product of two different cultures.
Asake's new single with Central Cee, Wave
In the song's video, YBNL signee Asake dons a Mario Balotelli shirt which the footballer wore during the treble-winning campaign of Inter Milan in the 2009/2010 season while Central Cee brings his versatility to play by blending into a bustling Lagos crowd, while dishing out rapid-fire lyrics.
Taking to social media to announce the song, Central Cee posted a picture of himself with Asake, captioned in Yoruba, "Olorun tesiwaju lati se ojurere si awa ati awon alatileyin wa," which translates to "God came forward to do good for us and our children."
The music video for Wave was shot at the iconic New Afrika Shrine in Lagos, a venue that belongs to Fela Kuti, the father of Afrobeat(s) and annually hosts the Felabration music festival. Asake perhaps uses the video to present himself as a defiant figure who is at the top of his game and conquering everything in his path, something Fela Kuti would definitely be able to relate to. The Afrika shrine could also be an acknowledgement of the source of Afrobeats.
For fans of Afrobeats and UK rap alike, Wave is a must-listen, and unsurprisingly, it is already dominating airwaves and playlists.
