Nigerian Afrobeats and singer Damini Ogulu, Burna Boy, might not be the most awarded artiste in the industry, but there are exclusive awards and records that set him apart from his peers.

The 33-year-old artiste, who explores Afrofusion, is known for his vocal texture and code-switching between English and indigenous Nigerian languages.

Burna Boy has sold out music shows and concerts across global stadiums and arenas. Notable among them is the 80,000-capacity London stadium, where he held his ‘Love, Damini’ concert in 2023. He also headlined the 20,000-capacity O2 arena and Paris La Defense arena, which hosted a 40,000-capacity audience.

Since launching into his music career in 2010, Burna Boy has risen to the peak and also cultivated a leading figure in the history of Afrobeats - pushing Afrobeats beyond the shores of Nigeria.

Just as BBC radio presenter Darren Joseph described him as an icon among his generation, TheRadar, in this article, spotlighted five awards exclusively won by Burna Boy as an Afrobeats artiste in the last five years.

5 exclusive awards won by Burna Boy

Best world album (2020)

Burna Boy clinched this award with the remarkable release of his Grammy-nominated album ‘African Giant.’ The recognition was awarded to him by the Edison Award in 2020. He is the only Nigerian artiste with the award so far in the music industry.

Best global music album (2021)

This is arguably his most acclaimed award from the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards. A feat he won with his ‘Twice as Tall’ album in 2021. In 2023, Burna Boy was nominated for four Grammy Awards categories, which made him the most nominated Nigerian artist in Grammy history. He has ten total career nominations and is the first Nigerian to get nomination nods in five consecutive years (2019 -2023).

All africa music awards (2022)

This is another award distinct to the self-acclaimed African giant at the All Africa Music Awards in 2022. His sixth studio album, ‘Love, Damini’ won the ‘Album of the Year at the event to recognise his artistry and Afrobeats prowess.

Rocklan One Radio Music Awards (2023)

The Port Harcourt-born artiste was recognised and awarded as the ‘Artiste of the Year’ by Rocklan One Radio Music Awards for his outstanding musical run in 2023.

First African artiste to his 2 million streams in the UK (2024)

Since his international success, Burna Boy has emerged as a global talent, smashing records and winning notable awards. In the most recent global recognition, the Last Last crooner became the first Nigerian to hit 2 million streams across the United Kingdom. This makes him the most commercial and sought-after artiste of all time in the UK. The BRITS Billion plaque was presented backstage on the fifth anniversary of his 2019 album African Giant

Album Review: “HEIS” is Rema’s monotonous outburst for recognition

Earlier, TheRadar reviewed Rema’s album, which was released on July 11. The album HEIS solidified an evolution in the 24-year-old's artistic journey, but it signaled a monotonous outburst to seek recognition.

Considering the title of the album and its meaning, Rema, born Divine Ikubor, made a rather bold declaration of himself as “number one” in the music game - which was quite controversial.
