The highly anticipated 67th Academy Grammy awards ceremony saw Nigerian Afrobeats female singer Temilade Openiyi known as Tems go home with an award.
Tems defeated Afrobeats stars Davido, Asake, Yemi Alade, Wizkid, Lojay and Chris Brown, who were all in the Best African Music Performance category.
During the Live broadcast of the prestigious award ceremony on Monday, February 3, Tems was announced winner with her 2024 song, Love Me Jeje.
The historic feat makes Tems the first Nigerian artiste to win the Best African Music Performance category. It also makes her the first Nigerian female artiste to win it.
The 29-year- old’s feat came after her song Burning lost out on the Best R&B Song category to Saturn by American singer SZA.
Tems, who was placed right next to American actor Will Smith during the Grammy, also lost out on Best Global Music Album award alongside Rema.
This year's Grammy Awards was held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, United States. The 2025 event showcased some of the biggest stars in the music industry, spanning Afrobeats, pop, rock, and hip-hop.
A total of 94 awards was presented, recognising music released between September 16, 2023, and August 30, 2024.
Notable historic awards during 67th Grammy Awards
Meanwhile, the Grammy Awards saw historic awards broken by popular American rapper Kendrick Lamar and Beyoncé.
Kendrick Lamar’s global diss track Not Like Us became the first diss track to ever win Best Rap Song category at the Grammys.
On the other hand, Beyoncé became the first Black woman to win a Grammy Award in a country category in over 50 years.
Chris Brown also won Best R&B Album with 11:11 (Deluxe). This is his second Grammy win after 12 years.
67th Grammy Awards champions support for wildfire victims
As Los Angeles recovers from the wildfire that destroyed over 14,000 houses and displaced thousands, the 67th edition of the Grammy was tailored to support victims.
These victims include particularly music artistes and members of the Academy who were in one way or another affected by the Wildfire.
Grammys and its affiliated MusiCares charity have reportedly distributed $2 million in emergency aid and pledged more than $4 million to help those impacted by the wildfires.
10 Nigerian albums submitted for 2025 Grammy’s Best Global Music Album nomination
TheRadar earlier reported that the Grammy Awards' Best Global Music Album category remains one of the most competitive, and Nigerian artistes made their official album submissions ahead of the 67th annual awards.
Their submissions are aimed at securing nominations after the first round of voting, which will be announced on November 8, 2024.
The final round of voting for the awards will run from December 12, 2024, to January 3, 2025, while the main award ceremony is scheduled to be held on February 2, 2025.
