Craven Cottage was rocking on Monday night, October 4, as Fulham staged a stunning last-gasp comeback to defeat Brentford 2-1 in a pulsating west London home derby.
Substitute Harry Wilson, who hasn’t started a single Premier League game this season was Fulham’s unexpected hero, coming off the bench and striking twice in stoppage time to snatch a victory that seemed out of reach.
For much of the game, it looked as though Brentford would claim the bragging rights. Bretford’s Vitaly Janelt’s thunderous strike in the 24th minute, a well-placed shot into the bottom corner, had given the away team a slim lead.
Brentford held firm for nearly 70 minutes, thwarting several Fulham attacks as Marco Silva’s men desperately pushed for an equaliser.
But as the game slipped into added time, Wilson’s moment arrived. In the 92nd minute, the Welshman struck with a clever flick at the near post, sending the ball looping over the Brentford goalkeeper and into the far corner.
The roar from Fulham fans was deafening as the home side finally found the breakthrough.
Yet Wilson wasn’t done, just four minutes later, he was in the right place again, meeting Antonee Robinson’s cross. Though he initially aimed to head the ball toward the far corner, the ball struck his shoulder instead, squeezing into the near corner of the net.
Fortune may have played a part, but Wilson’s sharp instinct turned what could have been a frustrating night into an unforgettable one for Fulham.
Marco Silva, ecstatic on the touchline, was full of praise for his side's display,
“We definitely deserved the three points, no doubts about it, we’ve been the best team on the pitch in most of our games. The reality is we didn’t get the points from many of those games. Tonight was more or less the same story. We didn’t give up — tried and tried to push. Credit to the players. We were rewarded with the last-minute goals.”
Reflecting on the emotional end to the derby, Silva added,
“Sometimes football takes from you — but in the end, it’s going to give to you if you deserve it. Emotions were there at the end of the game. It was a great night for the fans. The main thing is to give them these types of moments.”
Super Eagles star Alex Iwobi and compatriot Calvin Bassey played till stoppage time in the win against Fulham. With this dramatic victory, Fulham has now leapfrogged Brentford to move up to ninth in the Premier League, leaving the fans and players celebrating a night to remember.
For Wilson, who’s yet to start a game this season, his late heroics undoubtedly caught the attention of the Fulham coach and perhaps earned him a closer look for the starting lineup in subsequent games.
